CANE-MILL.
Application led March 17, 1919.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Belleville, county of St. Clair, State of Illinois, United States of America, have invented a certain new and useful Cane-Mill, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a cane mill and more particularly to the means forsecuring the crushing Tolls of the mill to their shafts.
Heretofore considerable difficulty has been experienced in properly securing the crushing rolls of cane mills to their shafts. Keying the rolls to the shafts has proven unsatisfactory owing to the liability of the keys becoming broken. To overcome this diiculty rolls have sometimes been either cast integral to the shafts or shrunk to the shafts. These methods, however, have proven not only expensive but have rendered it difficult to renew the rolls or shafts in case of breakage. I overcome these difficulties by providing hollow rolls with prismatic openings adapted to receive prismatic shafts and providing the said shafts with suitable bearing blocks to form bearings in the frame of the machine. Y
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one form of cane mill made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a top plan View, Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an en larged prospective view of one of the bear ing blocks.
5 indicates the lower plate of the mill which plate is provided with a circular boss 6 forming the lower bearing of the large crushing roll and with a pair of circular bosses 7 forming the lower bearings for the small crushing rolls. Supported from the lower plate 5 by means of a front plate 8 and a rear plate 9 is the top plate 10 corresponding in shape with the lower plate 5. The top plate 10 is provided with a iiange 11 forming the upper bearing for the large Specification of Letters Patent.

crushing roll 13 and with a pair of flanges 12 forming the upper bearings for the small crushing rolls 16. The large crushing roll is provided at each end with a square opening 14 adapted to receive a shaft 15 which is square throughout its length and is provided at its upper end with a sweep cap or other driving device (not shown). The small rolls 16 are similar to the large roll 13 being provided at each end with a square opening 17 adapted to receive one of the square shafts 18. In each of the bosses 6 and 7 and the flanges 11, and 12 is a bearing block 19 which is hollow and provided at eachv end with a square opening 20 adapted to receive one of the shafts 15 or 18. Situated between the upper face of the large crushing roll 13 and the upper plate 10 is a gear wheel 21 provided with a square opening to receive the shaft 15 and engaging with a pair of small gear wheels 22 situated between the upper end of the rolls 16 and the plate 10. In order to protect the upper bearings they may be provided with cover plates 23 and 24:, the plate 24 being provided with a suitable square opening to receive the shaft 15.
It will be evident that the construction of my device is such that there is no possibility of slipping between the shafts and the rolls and at the same time the rolls and shafts can be readily dismounted for renewal of any of the parts which might become broken.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent4 of the United States is:
1. In a cane mill, the combination with a supporting frame, of a prismatic shaft supported in said frame, a hollow crushing roll provided with a prismatic opening to receive the shaft, and a pair of bearing blocks mounted in said frame and provided with prismatic openings to receive the shaft.
2. In a cane mill, the combination with a supporting frame, of a prismatic shaft supported in said frame, a hollow crushing roll provided with a prismatic opening to receive the shaft, a pair of bearing blocks mounted in said frame and provided with prismatic being located between said roll and one of Said bearing blocks.
3. In a Cane mill, the combination with top and bottom plates With bearings, of
bearing blocks mounted in saidbearingsd and provided with prismatic openings, prismatie shafts mounted in said bearings, and 10 crushing rolls provided With prismatie openings and mounted on said shafts.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal.
