Description

B. S. WILLIAMS.
INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 25, 1917. 1,355,441 Patented Oct. 12, 1920.

.BENJAMIN s. WILLIAMS, or NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
mrERna -coMBUsrIon LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in internal combustion engines, and consists in the combinations, constructions and ar-' rangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved valve actuating means for internal combustion engines, the arrangement of the rocker, valve and push rod being such that friction is materially reduced in operation,
by virtue of the provision of knife edges and corresponding bearing sockets which contain oil, as more fully disclosed below.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a cross section of an engine,
illustrating the application of my invention,
and
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view through a portion of one of the valve operating levers.
in carrying out my invention, I provide two rows of opposed cylinders 1, which are secured to a main casting 7, which is in turn secured to a lower portion 8 by a suitable means, such as bolts 9. Each cylinder is provided with a piston 10 which is connected with a pitman 11. Each cylinder is provided with an intake valve 12 in the head of the cylinder, this intake valve being operated by a lever 13, one end of which is formed with a knife edge 13* arranged to enter a V-shaped bearing let at the end of the valve stem 12*. The opposite end of the lever 13 is formed with a knife edge 13 arranged to enter a V-shaped bearing 15 at the end of the push rod 16. This push rod 16 is designed to be operated by any suitable means, such as a cam (not shown). The lever 13 is provided with a central V-shaped socket 13 arranged to receive a fulcrum 17 which is swiveled at 18 to an adjustable screw 19 held in the end of the cylinder head.

fulcrum, being in the shape of a long thin bearing as in Fig. 2, must remain in the one position relative to the rocker arm while the screw does the turning to raise and lower the fulcrum. The purpose of this construction is to provide means for operating the valve which takes up very little power .through friction, for it will be observed that each end of the lever 13 is a knife edge, while the central fulcrum 17 is also a knife edge so that any movement of the push rod 16 is trans mitted to the valve stem 12 without any appreciable loss of power. Moreover, the sockets 14, 15 and 13 form reservoirs in whichthe oil may collect, as shown in Fig. 12, thus 1 I further eliminating friction. The screws .19 7
may be adjusted so as to take'up any lost motion.- I Each of the sets of cylinders of the engine,
has a valve chest 1 secured to the top by bolts 1*, or otherwise. The valve chest includes depressions l with bosses 1 through which the stem of. the valve passes. The valve chest l is surmounted by a housing 1 in which the valve operatin lever 13 and the cooperating devices there or, are located. The collar 1 of course surrounds the stem of the valve 12 so that a trough is formed around the valve stem, in which any foreign substance such as oil which should not sion for accumulating oil running down the bore wall.
2; The combination in an internal combustion engine, of a lever with a fulcrum socket, and knife edges at the opposite ends; a push rod with an oil pocketing V-bearing receiving one knife edge, a valvestem with an oil pocketing V-bearing receiving" the other knife edge, and a central fulcrum occupying the fulcrum socketin which oil is also pocketed.
its actuating mechanism in said valve chamher and housing respectively, said valve chest bore endingina depressionsurroundmg a boss in which the stem of the valve "operates, to catch oil accumulations running 10 7 down the bore Wall.
4. In' an internal combustion" engine, a
rocker arm for controlling valves, with a V-bearing; a fulcrum, comprising a long thin bearing having a sharp edge a cylindrical recess, and adjustably mounted means entering said recess and freely rotatable therein, for adjusting said bearing inrelation to the rocker arm,
5. In an internal combustion engine, a rocker arm for controlling valves, with a V-bearing; a fulcrum, comprising along thin bearing having a substantially sharp edge and'adjustable means supporting said fulcrum and engagingtherewith, said engagement being such that axial adjustment of the fulcrum may be made without rotation in the V bearin' BE JAMI s.
