a resident of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in internal combustion engines, and consists in the combinations, constructions and ar-' rangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved valve actuating means for internal combustion engines, the arrangement of the rocker, valve and push rod being such that friction is materially reduced in operation,
by virtue of the provision of knife edges and corresponding bearing sockets which contain oil, as more fully disclosed below.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a cross section of an engine,

in carrying out my invention, I provide two rows of opposed cylinders 1, which are secured to a main casting 7, which is in turn secured to a lower portion 8 by a suitable means, such as bolts 9. Each cylinder is provided with a piston 10 which is connected with a pitman 11. Each cylinder is provided with an intake valve 12 in the head of the cylinder, this intake valve being operated by a lever 13, one end of which is formed with a knife edge 13* arranged to enter a V-shaped bearing let at the end of the valve stem 12*. The opposite end of the lever 13 is formed with a knife edge 13 arranged to enter a V-shaped bearing 15 at the end of the push rod 16. This push rod 16 is designed to be operated by any suitable means, such as a cam (not shown). The lever 13 is provided with a central V-shaped socket 13 arranged to receive a fulcrum 17 which is swiveled at 18 to an adjustable screw 19 held in the end of the cylinder head.

fulcrum, being in the shape of a long thin bearing as in Fig. 2, must remain in the one position relative to the rocker arm while the screw does the turning to raise and lower the fulcrum. The purpose of this construction is to provide means for operating the valve which takes up very little power .through friction, for it will be observed that each end of the lever 13 is a knife edge, while the central fulcrum 17 is also a knife edge so that any movement of the push rod 16 is trans mitted to the valve stem 12 without any appreciable loss of power. Moreover, the sockets 14, 15 and 13 form reservoirs in whichthe oil may collect, as shown in Fig. 12, thus 1 I further eliminating friction. The screws .19 7

The collar 1 of course surrounds the stem of the valve 12 so that a trough is formed around the valve stem, in which any foreign substance such as oil which should not sion for accumulating oil running down the bore wall.
