Be it `known that I, RALPH WV. ANTHONY,
va citizen ofthe UnitedStates, residing at Ely, in theV county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Gas- Grate, of which the following'is a specification.
T his invention relates to improvements in grate attachments, and more particularly to an improvement upon my ,PatentNo 1,306,940, issued under date of June 17, 1919, in which there is provided an attachment for supplying gas to the grate for the purpose of starting a coal orwood fire withoutl the use of kindling wood, and which attachment ,may be readily applied to any grate without change in the construction of the grate.
`The invention contemplates an improved burner construction, whereby'the same are prevented from clogging Vup with dirt and other foreign matter, and also, a novel connection with the source of gas supply.
With-the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description Aproceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of 4parts and in .the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood`that within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 designates a grate bar having the usual cross fingers 6 produced by projections or lugs extending from the sides Vthereof and upon which the fuel is supported. The grate bar is usually mounted at its ends in bearings in the stove or furnace, itsl front end projecting through the front wall of the fire box and formed to receive a suitable 1 shaker handie for :rocking the grate, or any I Specification of Letters Patent.

number thereof, which may be employed in connection with the particular heating unit.
The improved grate attachment forming the subject matter of the present'invention, consists of the body iron elongated tubular body 7 which is U-shaped to it contour of the grate bar 5, which latter is of substantially circular cross section, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Thus, the body is provided with a concave recess in its top portion produced by a series of upwardly and outwardly projecting fingers or burners 8 in the form of hooks formed as integral parts of thel casting of the tubular body or casting extending upwardly and outwardly between the projections or lugs Gand intermediately of the top and bottom faces thereof. These burners-are provided with openings 9 in the bottom portions thereof near their free ends, thus providing an overhanging shelf or top wall 10, to protect the burner and prevent foreign matter accumulating in the burner, in conjunction with the closed end portion 11 of the burner.
VThe body is secured in position by inverted U-shaped'bolts `or the like 12 which engage over the grate bar 5 between the projections 6 at suitably spaced points and engaged through opposed apertured ears 18 formed upon the body 7 or burner casting, nuts 111 being engaged on.the threaded extremities ofthe bolts, in order to securely support the burner pipe or body in contact with the grate bar. l, The supply end of the body is closed and provided with an angular portion or elbow 15 to which is coupled as by a swiveled connection 16, an elbow 17 which in turn is provided with a swivel connection or coupling 18 with an elbow 19 to which the supply pipe 2O is coupled as indicated at 21. By this construction, the
desired angular relation of the pipes may be provided, to accommodate the device to stoves or furnaces of different types of constructions and wherein the relation of the supply body to the grate must be varied, the said relation of the coupled elbows or pipe sections being such as to accommodate most any arrangement in use.
Thus, the gas may be supplied from a main under pressure and suitably controlled, so that igniting the burners 8, the iame will be caused to ignite the fuel upon the lugs or projections forming the fingers 6 that is, upon the grate and coal, wood or other fuel may be started by this arrangement, quickly and economically lwithout the use of kindling, and the usual trouble and annoyance Y of smoke, in starting fires. It shouldalso vbe-'noticed that burners 8 are located below; the.` top edges `of the grate projections or lugs, instead of level -with the uppensurfaces thereof, thus obviating necessity or possibility of the same bearing the weight ofthe fuel as stated in my former patent, and lalsoobviatingfthe necessity of employ- 'Ningl separate tubes since theVA burners are 'formed .as an` integral partv of the casting .forming'the body orcasting, the sameprojecting' inparallel relation'ateither side of :the/grate bar.` `r Also, since the casting or body lisV securely attached to the grateV against rotation, and since the pipe connections are swiveled as specified, oscillation or shakingof the grate'bar will be permitted withoutdisturbing the gas connection, and
