SADDLE FOR MAINS.

Be it known that I, GEORGE P. WARTCHOW, a citizen orn the United States, residing at Minot, in the county of Ward, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Saddles for Mains; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the'art to which it appertains to mali-e and use the saine.
This invention relates to water distribution, and more especially to mains and pipes; and the object of the same is to produce a saddle which will protect the service cock and will serve as a support for the pipe or casing through which a key may be inserted to close the cock. i
Vhen .it is desired to lead a service pipe from a .main into a house or other point where water or gas is to be used, the main is tapped (usually in the side) and a service cock screwed into the hole and closed, and from this cock the Service pipe is led and is later connected with the plumbing of gas system, the service pipe having itsown cutoil' cock within the dwelling. This service cock in cities is usually at or near the curb line and issuimounted by a curb box having a cover at the ground level, so that the authorities may lift the cover and insert al key and close the cock to cut o the water at a point as near the main -as possible. In
smaller cities and towns the inain may not be so deep and the corporation cock 1s not always so well protected, and it is the purpose of the present invention to provide a Y device in the nature of a saddle'which can be clamped over the main and which has one end'shaped so as to protect this cock, as the device will sustain a considerable load in case the same should be thrown upon it by vehicles passing over the main, perhaps when the soil was soft.
Details are set forth below and shown in the drawings wherein:

his invention consists primarily of a saddle havinot a body 1 cut out or arched on its under side so as to lit closely over the upper half of a main of that size to which it is adapted, its rear end being carried down in a single leg ortoe 2 having a set screw 3 which can be tightened up against the main, and its front end being carried down and forked so as to produce arms 1l spaced suhciently to straddle the cock C without touching the same. These arms are substantially triangular in side view, and are connected by a web 5 i'iorming a continuation of the body, which web and the arms collectively constitute `a three-sided inclosure for the cock and the parts above it. The web carries an u pstanding sleeve (i, and into this sleeve is inserted the lower end of a pipe 7 which is secured within the sleeve as by lead packing 8, calking, or a screw joint.l Over the upper end of the pipe 7 is slipped another pipe 9, preferably having a cap 10 at its top which will stand at or near the level of the ground.
No novelty is claimed for the cock C, but as usual it is of the globe-valve type, its plug having a web 11 across its upper end. key stem 12 is disposed between the'arms 4, transversely notched as at its lower end at 13 to fit over said web, and preferably held thereon by means of a pin 15 passing Aacross the stem and through the web. The body of the stein rises through the casing and its sleeve, and may be squared at its upper end as shown at 16. In F ig. 2 is shown the ordinary key 17 consisting of a long shank with a handle at its upper end and a head 18 at its lower end having a squared socket to lit on the squared end 16 of the key stein.

That is claimed as new is:
1.
