To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. MORAN, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at J ersey City, in the county of Hudson and State oi New Jersey, have invented' certain new and useful Improvements in Signaling Systems, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to signaling systems, and more particularly to a signaling system in which a plurality of vibrating contact bells may be operated either as vibrating signals or as single stroke signals.
The object of this invention, in general, is to provide means in connection with a system of the above character whereby the several bells, when operated as vibratory signals, may be operated without interference, one with the other, due to different ad-, or auxiliary current paths from terminals, one each for single stroke and vibrating operation and one common, and means are provided for interrupting the leads used in single stroke operation during the period it is desired to operate the bells as vibrating signals. This may be accomplished by wiring the several single stroke leads to contacts controlled by a relay which, upon operation, opens the single stroke leads, thereby interrupting the circuits through which current might be fed from the armature of a more rapidly vibrating bell to the winding of a less rapidly vibrat ing one.
The drawing is a diagram of apparatus wired in accordance with this invention. In the drawing 5, 5, 5, 5 designate the windings of a plurality of bells, which windings are connected at one side to a common lead 6, itself connected with the grounded pole of battery 7. The opposite side of each of the windings 5. 5, 5, 5 is connected with a corresponding armature 8, 8, 8. 8, which armatures are connected by leads 9, 10, 11 and 12 with armature springs 13, 14, 15 and 16 of a relay 17. The armature springs 13, 14, 15
and 16 in their normal positions close back contacts 19, 20, 21 and 22, which are connected with a common lead 23 extending through contacts of a switch 24 to the live pole of the battery 7. Normally closed contacts 25, 25, 25, 25 on the armatures 8, 8, 8, 8, are connected directly to the lead 23 and are adapted to thereby be connected with the live pole of battery 7 by operation of the switch 24. The relay 17 is included in a normally open" circuit with the battery 7, which is adapted to be closed by a key 27 In the position of the parts shown in the drawing, the operation of the switch 24 to close its contacts will complete a circuit from the live pole of battery 7, over the conductor 23, through armatures 13, 14, 15, 16, contacts 19, 20, 21 and 22 and the leads 9, 10, 11 and 12 to one side of the several windings 5, 5, 5, 5, through said windings and over the conductor 6 to the grounded pole of battery 7, thereby causing the bells to operate a single stroke for each closure of the contacts of the switch 24.
When operating the several bells as Vibrating signals the key 27 will be operated to energize the relay 17 and open the contacts 19, 20, 21 and 22, thereby opening the leads 9, 10, 11 and 12. The operation of the switch 24 will now close a circuit from live pole of battery 7 with the lead 23 and thence through the several contacts 25, 25, 25, 25, thence through the armatures 8, 8, 8, 8 and the windings 5, 5, 5, 5 to the lead 6 and the grounded pole of the battery 7.
lVhat is claimed is 1. In a signaling system, a plurality of electrically-controlled bells, a source of current, circuits and connections for causing the operation of said bells from said source as single stroke signals, circuits and connections for causing the operation of said bells from said source as vibrating signals, and electrically-operated means for opening the circuits over which the single stroke operation is controlled during the operation of said bells as vibratory signals.
