To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE P. BAKKER and OLrvEiiiE. UNDERWOOD, citizens of the UnitedV States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Apparatus for Elevators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. y
rlhis invention relates to af safety apparatus for elevators, and has for its object the provision of simple and eficient means that will operate for stopping an elevator cage when it descends too fast, or when the elevator cage is accidentally lowered by tle breaking of some lifting part or the li ce. i
lith this and other objects in view, our invention comprises'certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly .pointed out in the appended claims.

curely forcing rod 13 down within the sleeve, causing theV lower end of the rod to force the long blade 18 downward, breaking the circuit as shown in Fig. 4. vThe breaking ofthe circuit will deenergize the magnet 19V carried by bracket 20, which bracket 2O has pivoted, at 21, arm 22, which arm 22 carries at its upper end a large weight 23. Upon the magnet 19 being deenergiz'ed, this will cause the weight 23 to be released and dropped tothe position shown by dotted lines 24 (Fig. 3,), the weightstriking the head 25 on thevhoriz'ontal anglel arm 26 of the switch blade 27 (Fig. The switch blade 27 is pivotally mounted at 28, and normally is held between the' spring lips 29 of the switch 30. A grip'31 is fastened to the upper end of blade' 27. Upon the weight 23 striking the head 25, the blade 2 7 will be withdrawn from between the lips 29, breaking the circuit through switch 30 consequently breaking the circuit in the solenoids 32, permitting the armatures 33 to move outwardly within the solenoids 32, allowing the lever links 34 to swing outwardly on their pivots 35; this moving of lever links outwardly on theirpivots 35 will permit their wedged heads 36 to also move outwardly, acting upon the gripping jaws 37 to cause their outer vends to grip or tightly clamp the auxiliary rails 38.

and wire 53 leads from the magnet coil to the, battery so that a complete circuit is created through these wires and elements when thev switch 30 isgclos'ed, until the weight 23 fallsupon the head 25 of'v switch 30, opening Y the switch and breaking the circuit.

y the combination with a car, of a clutch mechanism Secured to the bottom of the car, said ping jaw devices at each endl of the car, each device provided with curved'jaws, slotted wedged heads between the` inner ends of each of the jaws of each jaw. device, a grooved, hollow casing between the wedged heads, each head provided with a rod-like extension extending Iinto the'casing, a coil spring on the rod-like extension of each jaw between the body of the jaw and one end of the-casing, capsV resting in the groove of the casing, bolts extending through the caps and fastening the* caps against the casing, lever links pivotally mounted at their inner ends upon the car and extending across the wedged heads, pins on the heads at opposite sides of eachk link, pins in the slots of the heads for guidinglthe heads in their travel between the jaws of the aw devices, and electrically-controlled means between the outer ends yof the lever links for drawing the outer ends together and thereby leaving the jaw devices free, or releasing the outerends of the lever links and *causing the springs te act to force the wedged heads farther between A the jaws of the jaw devices for causing the outer ends 0f action.

In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with the floor of anelevator, of a clutch'mechanism carried by said door and comprising apair of jaw devices the jaws toexert a gripping i spring-pressed lwedged heads positioned betweenthe inner ends of the jaws, lever links extending across the heads, means on the heads whereby, whenthe llever links are swung upon their pivots or ulerurns, the
