A Ystud 17 projects rearwardly from the lower portion of the operating bargll: Vand engages the side arm 2, thereby preventing outward movement of the lower end of the bar 14 when pressure is exerted on the bottle 9 to depress the rest 16 and bar 14 to effect contraction of the locking ring 8 and operation 'of the lock mechanism. i

-A locking element 18 depends vfrom the rest 16 and passes through an opening formed in the base 1 and is adapted to be engaged bymeans of a lock bolt 19 of a suitable lock mechanism mounted upon the rack and for convenience disposed beneath the base 1 and in the space inclosed by the lower portion of the attaching bar 4 and the strut 5. The lock mechanism is disposed within a suitable vcasing 20 and is adapted to be operated by means of a key 21, as indicated by 'dotted lines in Fig. 4. It is to be underc stood that the lock mechanism may be of any designgso long as it coperates with the locking element 18 to secure the gripping ring 8 in contracted position about the neck of the bottle 9, thereby preventing removal Y of such bottle until Vreleased by opening the lock by means of a proper key 21. y

A bottle rack and lock constructed in accordance with this invention involves a relatively simple and light structure and may be readily attached to a wall, post or other support and is adapted to receive either a filled or an empty bottle. In this way the consumer is assured of safe delivery of the goods and the merchant is enabled to have the empty bottles safely returned, since neither the full nor the empty bottle may be removed from the rack when properly positioned therein except by the use of a proper key with which both the consumer and the merchant are possessed. It is assumed that the gripping ring 8 is expanded, hence the operating bar 14 and rest 16 are relatively elevated. A bottle 9'being placed in the holder passes through the opening encircled by the flange 7 and through the gripping ring 8 until its bottom comes in contact with the rest 16. Pressure is now eX- erted upon the bottle to effect a lowering of vthe rest 16 and operating bar 14 with the result that the locking element 18 is depressed and brought into locking engagement with p the bolt 19 and made secure thereby. At the same time the levers 11 are rocked, thereby drawing the free ends of the gripping ring 8 together and contracting such gripping ring about the neck of the bottle 9 in a manner to prevent withdrawal of the bottle. It will thus be understood that the bottle is made secure both for the consumer and the merchant and either one may obtain the' bottle by releasing the r lock Vmechanism and drawingupward onY the bottle to remove it from the holder, the sides of thebottle riding upon the gripping ring and expanding the same and setting the device for reception of the next bottle.

The foregoing description and the drawing have reference to what may be considered the preferred,-or approved form of my invention. It isto be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall with the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus fullydescribed my invention,` what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters VPatent is 1. A bottle rack comprising a base, arms extending upwardly from the base, an annular member connecting the upper ends of the arms and having an innerv flange, an inclosed locking mechanism disposed below the base, contractile bottle gripping means located within the annular member just belowy the flange thereof, an operating bar having a bottle engaging rest at its lower end and having its upper end connected with the bottle gripping means and a locking element movable with'the operating bar and-adapted to pass through an opening in the bottom and cooperating with, the locking element to secure the parts in locked position.

2. In a bottle rack, comprising a holder for receiving the bottle, oppositely disposed bottle gripping elements, an operating bar slidable within the holder, levers pivoted in-v termediate their ends and having pivot connection with the bottle gripping element and v operating bar, a rest at the lower end of the operating bar to be engagedibyrthe bottom of the bottle, a key operated locking mechanism disposed beneath the holder, and a locking element movable vwith the operating bar and adapted to be secured by said lock-` ing mechanism to prevent removal of the bottle when properly positioned in the holder.

3. In a bottle rack, including a holder for receiving the bottle, acontractile bottle gripping ring, U-shaped elements pivoted intermediate their ends and havingcorresponding ends connected with the free ends of the bottle gripping ring, an operating bar 'connected with the other ends of said elements and adapted to be actuated by the bottle, and a key operated vlocking mechanism for securing the bottle gripping ring in locked engagement. A bottle rack, including a holder for receiving the bottle, a gripping ring*` comprising pivoted sections, cooperating U-shaped elements pivotally connected at corresponding ends to the free ends of the ring sections, an operating bar connected with the other ends of said elements for actuating the same and adapted to be operated by the bot- 125 tle, and a key voperated locking mechanisln for securing theV operating bar when the gripping ring is in locked engagement with the bottle.

5.
