IMPROVEMENT IN CALKS FOR'HORSESHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,081, dated January 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. CLARKE, of Winsted, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Toe-Calks for Horseshoes; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in
Figure 1, a perspective view; Fig. 2, a transverse central section; and in Fig. 3, a transverse central section with the pin inserted.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of toe-calks for horseshoes which are made with one or more tenons or projections upon their upper edge, by means of which they may be temporarily attached to the shoe preparatory to welding.
Heretofore these have been made by cutting the metal away to leave tenons or projections, or in dies to forge the projections; but invariably require some such mechanical operation and considerable waste of material.
The object of this invention is to save the metal and avoid the labor, thereby producing a cheaper article; and it consists in constructing the call; with one or more perforations vertically, or nearly so, through it, and through which, when placed upon the shoe, a pin may be driven into the shoe to secure the two together.
A is the calk, cut from bars of metal rolled into the required form in transverse section,
and each calk perforated vertically, or nearly so, with one or more perforations, a, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. By preference, in preparing these for the consumer, I insert a pin, d,,from the outer edge, as seen in Fig. 3, extending nearly or quite through the perforation, and make this pin tapering at the point. The consumer, after having heated the shoe, places the calk thereon in the required position, then drives the pin or pins through into the shoe, which temporarily attaches the calk to the shoe in its required position that the two may be heated together and welded in the usual manner.
The advantage of this construction over that of the projecting studs before referred to is that the surface of the calk which rests upon the shoe is perfectly flat, and will lie upon the shoe without holding, this necessary holding of the calk being an inconvenience in the attachment of the calk to the shoe.
The call: is complete as an article of manufacture without the pins, as the consumer may furnish these himself.
Another advantage is that the calks may be cut from a bar of iron without waste, and perforated at a trifling cost, very much less than calks having tenons or studs formed thereon.
I do not claim a toe-calk having projecting studs or tenons upon the upper ed go.
I claim as my invention As an article of manufacture, the hereindescribed toe-calk, having one or more perforations vertically, or nearly so, therethrough, substantially as set forth.
