Description

J. P. CARTER. BOLSTER STIRRUP. APPLICATION FILED SEPT- s. 1915.
PatenteiAug 24,1920.
UNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN P. CARTER, 0F CARTER, MGNTANA.
BOLSTER-STIRRUP.
Application filed September 6, 1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN P. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carter, in the county of Chouteau and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolster-Stirrups, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a bolster stirrup and more particularly to a stirrup for holding a false bolster in position upon a regular wagon bolster.
My invention has for its principal object the provision of a stirrup of this character which is simple and inexpensive in construction and which may be used with a false bolster without cutting the bolster into any particular shape.
Another object is the construction of the stirrup in such a manner that it will be in terchangeable from one wagon to another.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts as will be more clearly understood from the following specification and drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in sec tion, showing the stirrup in position upon a bolster, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the stirrup.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the wagon bolster of usual construction and 2 indicates a standard or stake secured in a socket formed in or secured to the end of the bolster. The false bolster is indicated at 3 and as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings this bolster is of less length than the main bolster 1 and in fact terminates a short distance from the inner face of the standard or stake 2.
My stirrup is adapted to be received upon the bolster 1 and engages the sides of the stake 2 as well as the false bolster This stirrup comprises a plate 4 having the vertically extending side pieces 5 secured to one face thereof and these side pieces are of greater length than the plate 4 and as more particularly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings extend below the lower edge of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2a, 1920.
Serial No. 252,930.
said plate 4-. These side pieces are also preferably cut at an angle so that the lower edges are of greater width than the top edge. Vertically extending cleats are secured to the opposite face of the plate 4 and as is more particularly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings the cleats are spaced apart and are also spaced from the vertical edges of the plate l. The cleats 6 are of a same height as the plate 4 although if desired they might be made of slightly less height.
In use the stirrup will be placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings whereby the lower edge of the plate 4 will rest upon the top surface of the bolster 1. The cleats 6 will receive the stake or standard 2 therebetween, the cleats being spaced a suflicient distance to receive said stake or standard. The side pieces 5, as shown, engage the side faces of both the false bolster 3 and the main bolster 1 and the lower end thereof extends to the lower face of the bolster 1. Various types of fastening means have previously been employed for holding a false bolster upon a main bolster but I have provided a stirrup of simple construction which may be readily placed upon a bolster and so engage a false bolster as to prevent the same from being disengaged from the main bolster. At the same time it is unnecessary to cut the end of the false bolster into any particular shape and practically the only requirement is that the ends of the false bolster be sufiiciently spaced from the face of the standard to receive the plate 4. The cleats 6 engaging the sides of the standard will preventv the stirrup from being disengaged from the main bolster and at the same time the cleats form a brace for the standard.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, material. dimensions. et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secureby Letters ing the usual upright standards, and a false bolster on the main bolster, the ends of which fall short of said standards; plates positioned between the ends of the false bolster and said standards and equipped with cleats which embrace the latter, and a pair of side members carried by each plate 10 and encompassing both of said bolsters substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN P. CARTER. Witnesses: v V- J. C. KING,
