UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE.
JoHNR. TRUDE'ILLE, or CHIPPEWA FALLS, WISCONSIN.
COLUMN CONSTRUCTON.
I Application filed June 27,
T 0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN R; TRUDELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chippewa Falls, in the county of Chippewa and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Column Constructions; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful' improvements in column construction of the type employing an outer shell to give a massive appearance and has for one of its objects the provision of a supporting means of light weight that is capable of withstanding considerable weight and strain and which is so constructed that practically all of the strain is relieved from the shell.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means for lowering the center of gravity to the column, thereby increasing its stability.
A further object of this 'invention is the provision of a plurality of supporting blocks arranged at intervals to engage the shell at spaced points to reinforce and prevent the same from buckling or collapsing.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a column construction of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
`With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a front elevation of a column construction constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral l indicates as an entirety a column Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 24, 1920.
1919. Serial No. 307,142.
consisting of an outer shell 2 constructed of light material such as fiber, matting, etc., and which can be covered with a wood veneering, paper, protective or ornamental treatment, stucco, plaster, or any other wall covering material. The shell 2 can be of any desired shape and is disposed between upper and lower bases 3 and t. The lower base 4 being provided with suitable supporting feet 5 while the upper base 3 is adapted to be connected to a table, arch, or to any other device in which the column is used in connection with. I
- A post G is located within the shell 2 and has its ends disposed within openings 7 formed in heads 8. The heads 8 are adapted to bear against the inner face of the shell 2 and be glued or otherwise secured thereto and also bear against the upper and lower faces 3 and 4L and secured thereto by suitable fasteners. The post'G is glued or otherwise secured within the openings 7 in the heads 8 so as to provide a substantial structure capable of withstanding great weight and strain and which will relieve comparatively all of the strain on the shell 2. Any number of posts 6 can be employed depending entirely on the wishes of the user. Relatively spaced blocks 9 are mounted upon the post and engage the inner face of the shell 2 at spaced intervals to reinforce and strengthen the shell to prevent the same from buckling or collapsing. By having the post secured to the heads 8 and the heads S secured to the bases 3 and 4 and iitted tightly inside of the shell makes the whole inside structure practically equivalent in strength to that of the solid column of wood.
A weight l() is located within the shell 2 upon the post 6 and is adapted to increase the stability of the column and can be shifted to various points along the post for changing the center of gravity of the column.
Nhile I have shown and described the preferred embodimentof my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A column construction including a shell,
bases associated with the ends of the shell, In testimony whereof I aix my signature heads engaging Jche inner faces ofthe shell in presence of two Witnesses.
ilnd secured -thereto vland to the bases, and JOHN R. TRUDELLE- aving openings theiein, a post having its ends secured Within the openings of 'the Witnesses: Y
heads, spacing blocks carried by said post KATIE HAYES,
and engaging the inner face of the shell. Y Y HENRY LEBEIs, Jr.
