PATENT oFFI-CE.
KARL AUGUST BRUNINQOF ZAANDAM, itrlTnnRLANns.`
AUTOMATIC TIREARM.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, KARL AUGUST BRUN- ING, engineer, a subject of Germany, and resident of Zaandam, Netherlands, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Firearms; and I do hereby declare theV following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art rto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures ofreference marked therein, which form a part of this specification. Y
This invention relates to lire arms, and more particularly to fire arms of the type shown and described in my prior United States Letters Patent, No. 1,070,579, issued August 19, 1918, in which they breech bolt carries a pair of locking levers operated by projections formed on the slide, the arrangement being such that during the rearward movement of the slide those projections force the locking levers inward and thereby disconnect the bolt from the barrel; whereas during the return or forward movement of the slide, the aforesaid levers are forced outward into position to again lock the bolt and barrel together. Reference may be had to this patent, which is hereby made a part of the present specification, for a further understanding of the action of the locking levers and directly associated parts.
The present invention expressly comprises certain improvements in or relating to the mechanism disclosed in my said patent as will be hereinafter fully explained; the essential object of the invention, stated briefly, being the provision of a device which, when actuated, serves to retract the slide and, in consequence, eiect the loosening of the empty cartridge and the disengagement of the locking levers. rPhe rearward movement of the slide is eifected`by hand in 'ordinary ring, and requires considerable effort; whereas the operating device which I now provide, is extremely simple in its construction and can be easily and quickly actuated.
An embodiment of the invention is illus-4 trated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmental side elevation of a gun equipped with the improved slideoperating device, showing the parts, inv normal position with the breech closed;
v specificati@ of Lettersrate'nt. Paten-fed Aug, 24,1920,
Application led July 10, 1919. Serial No. 309,918. Y 'I Fig. 2 is a plan viewof Fig. 1 with parts broken `away and inV section; l
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the breech partly open.`
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates the slide which is mounted on the lfixed breech frame 2 and'is shown in Figs. 1, 2 and as at the limit'ofV its forward movement, t'. c., in normal position. To effect' the rearwardmovement of the slide, there is provided a substantially L- shaped lever 3, the inner arm 4 of whichis in the form of a circular plate or block and is rotatably fitted in a circular recess or socket 5 formed in the rear portion of the slide. This arm or block 4 is notched to provide a nose or shoulder 6 for coperation with an upstanding abutment or A lug 7 formed on the adjacent portion of the breech frame 2, so that when lever 3 is swung -in the direction indicated by the arrow X (Fig. 1) by means of its knob or handle 8, the block 4 will rotate in its socket and its shoulder 6 will be pressed forcibly against said lug or abutment 7 with the result that the slide is shifted rearwardly into the position repre` sented in Fig. 4. The long outer arm of the lever stands at that time in verticall position, having been stopped in such position by striking against a projection l2 formed on the exterior wall of the socket 5. Thereafter, during the continued rearward movement of the lever, the slide is forced backward by direct traction so as to open the breech completely.
As the slide moves rearward, the two projections or noses 9 formed on its opposite sides act to force the locking levers l0 carried by the breech bolt 15 inward in the manner disclosed yin my above-identified prior patent, thereby releasing or yunlocking the breech bolt from the barrel, while at the same rtime the bolt itself is slightlyV retracted and, in turn, loosens the empty cartridge 11 in the barrel. The locking levers, however, form no'part of the present in vention which is limited to the provision of the operating element 3 and its connection with the slide; and for that reason it is deemed unnecessary in this case to illustrate and describe their construction and mounting with any degree of particularity, especially in view of their inclusion in the patented structure. F or all present purposes, therefore, the mere statement as to the.
employment of said levers is sufiicient.
During the subsequent closing of thel of said lever rests upon the horizontal faceV let of the slide. A small spring may be utilized to assist the return movement of the lever; but since this spring,` is not essential to the invention, it has not been illustrated. The locking levers 10 are rengaged With the barrel to lock the breech bolt thereto, during the return movement of the slide, as explained in said patent.
It will be noted that the handle S of the operating lever 3 may be pulled in a back- Ward direction to open the breech Without turning said lever relatively to the slide, it being only necessary therefor that the axis of said handle shall belovver than the axis of the inner arm il about which the lever rotates. Y
Vhat I claim is:
In an automatic firearm of the kind described, a fixed breech frame, a breech bolt, locking members arranged on said breech bolt, a slide movable on the breech frame adapted to act onV the locking members and to open the breech, a fixed abutment on the fixed breech frame, and a. lever pivotally mounted on said Vslide the longer arm of which is provided With an ractuating` knob While the shorter arm is applied against the aforesaid abutment of the fixed breech frame. Y v
In testimony whereof I all'xmy signature in presence of two Witnesses. Y
KARL AUGUST BRAUNING.
