To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD J. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Candle-Lamp, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to candle lamps and has for its object certain improvements in candle or sanctuary lamps of the type described in my Patent 1,255,614, Feb. 5, 1918, and my application, Sr. No. 293,147, filed Apr. 28, 1919.

The object of the present invention is a particularly simple and eflicient tight joint, between the cap for the candle and the base in which the candle is mounted, which prevents the melted wax or grease from running over the base when the candle has shortened so that the cap rests on the base.

The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my lamp, the candle being shown in elevation.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view through the cup-shaped base and the cap for the candle when the candle is shortened within the base so that the cap rests on the base.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view of the cap and base, the same being shown as slightly separated.

1 designates the main frame or holder of the lamp which is here shown as a tubular glass shell open at its top and having a contracting depending bottom 2.

The frame or holder may be supported in any suitable manner and as here shown, it is adapted to be suspended as shown in my patent and application referred to.

3 is a receptacle mounted in the bottom 2 of the holder 1. 4 is the cup shaped base in which the candle 5 is mounted, the cup shaped base 4 being mounted in the receptacle. The base 4 as here shown, is formed with an outwardly extending annular flange 6 which has a smooth upper face 7 and with an upwardly extending annular flange 8 having a smooth external conical surface 9,

which meets the face 7. The flange 6 rests upon a horizontal annular ledge portion 10 of the receptacle 3 and is spaced apart from the annular wall 11 of the receptacle 3, and the base is also formed with a central dependlng reduced portion or boss 12 which fits an annular vertical wall 13 of the receptacle between the ledge 10 and a downwardly contracting central portion 14 of the receptacle which portion is located in the bottom of the holder.

. 15 is the cap for the candle, said cap hav- 1ng an internal conical smooth surface 16 at its lower end complemental to the conical surface 9 of the cup shaped base.

As the candle shortens the cap 15 approaches and moves into engagement with the base 4 and these smooth surfaces 9 and 16 come snugly into engagement with each other before the lower edge face 17 reaches the face 7 of the flange 6 and hence these smooth complemental or fitting faces 9 and 16 form a tight joint so that wax cannot overflow the base 3. Preferably, the base 3 of the flange 8 thereof and the cap 15 are formed of the same material as glass and the surfaces 16 and 9 are ground so that they cohere when the cap 15 rests on the base 8.

What I claim is: V

1. A candle lamp comprising a cuped base having an upwardly extending annular flange formed with an outer smooth. conical face, a candle seated in the base, and a cap for the candle having its lower end provided with an internal smooth conical surface movable into engagement with the conical surface of the cup shaped baseas the candle shortens, substantially as and for the purpose described.

A candle lamp comprising a cuped base formed with an upwardly extending annular flange composed of glass having a smooth ground conical peripheral surface, a candle seated in the base and a cap for the candle, the cap being composed of glass and having an internal ground conical surface at its lower end complemental to the conical surface of the base and movable into coherence therewith as the candle shortens, giublstantially as and for the purpose speci- 3.
