SHADE m AUTO HEAD-LAMPS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A 17 1920 Application filed 0mm 31. 1919. Serial m). 334.711.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RANK E. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bremerton, in the county of Kitsap and State of Vashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shades for Auto Head-Lamps, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to automobile head lamps and has for its object the provision of a shield attachment engageable upon a head lamp and provided with a plurality of vanes or fins so arranged as to prevent blinding of the drivers of approaching automobiles while yet permitting adequate illumination of the roadway.
An important object is the provision of a shield of this character which is detach- 1 l' ably engageable upon a head lamp and which is provided at its upper portion with a plurality of parallel vanes which extend downwardly in an inclined direction and which is provided at its lower portion with a plurality of-vans which are radial with respect to the center of the source of light, that is they coincide in direction withthe direction of the rays of light.
7 An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient and durable in use, eflicient in service, and a general improvement in the art.
\Vith the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a head lamp equipped with my device,
Fig. 2 isa front elevation, and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectlonal view.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the letter A designates an automobile.
head lamp of ordinary construction having an incandescent bulb B as its source of light, though it will be understood that as far as the invention is concerned, the source of light might be an acetylene gas burner.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a shield which comprises a circular band 10 of a size to engage against the front of a lamp A and this band carries a plurality of spring fingers 11 inwardly curved at their outer ends, as shown at 12, for engagement with the flange C usually provided on head lamps and often forming the door .frame thereof.
secured transversely of the upper portion of the band 10 are vanes or fins "13 which are parallel, asshown, and secured within the lower portion of the band are trans versely disposed blades or fins 14; The vanes or fins 13 areinclined downwardly and forwardly so as to deflect light from said source B onto,the roadway while not permitting the rays of light to extend upwardly. The vanes or blades 14 are also inclined downwardly except that instead of being parallel they are radial with respect. to the center of the 'bulb B or the source of light. All these vanes are formed preferably of tin-or other suitable thin material and are preferably painted black upon their upper sides.
In the use of my shield it will be seen that rays of light emanating from the source B will strike against the blades or vanes 13' and be deflected thereby downwardly in an inclined direction onto the roadway and the rays of light emanating from the source will pass directly between the various blades most communities, will be eliminated while not in any way sacrificing efiicient illumination of the roadway.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form,
construction, and arrangementof parts as will not depart. from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. An attachment for automobile. head lamps comprising a circular band detachably engaged upon the front of a head lamp, a plurality of transverse forwardly and downwardly inclined parallel blades within the upper portion of said band, and a plurality .of other downwardly and forwardly inclined blades within the lower portion of 14 while the rays of light emanating from said band, said last named blades being and forwardly inclined blades within the radial with respect to the center of the source lower portion of said band, said last named of light of the lamp. blades being radial with respect to the cen- 2. A shield attachment for automobile ter of the source of light of the lamp, said 5 head lamps comprising a circular band at blades being painted black upon their upper 15 tachment engaged upon the front of the surfaces and having their under surfaces head lamp, a plurality of transverse forpolished. wardly and downwardly inclined parallel In testimony whereof I affix my signature. blades within the upper portion of said 1 10 band, and a plurality of other downwardly v FRANK E. DAVIS.
