Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WM. H. MARSHALL AND F. A. .ROSS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. E 3,4199, dated August 28, 1855.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the. casev open and ready for use; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the case when closed and serving the purpose of a piece of household furniture.
Our sewingmachine case is intended to serve as a box, which will, when closed, protect a sewing-machine from dust or damage, and when open be adapted to the use of the seamstress when using it. TheA dimensions of one for ordinary use are: height, three feet; front width, twenty one inches; depth, twenty inches. The top portion (seeFig. 2) will vary in height with the kind of machine used. It will generally be six or eight inches.
The body of the case forms a cabinet with two 'doors in front, which open vout parallel with the front, and lwhen so open form the supports oftwo leaves suspended from the sides at top. The top portion is in two parts, hinged at top, and opens so that the front part will lie over upon the rear part. Within and beneath the rear part are drawers to hold work, &c.
Within the body of the case are the works by which the sewing-machine is operated, consisting of the treadle and crank, with balancewheel and pulley. The whole is provided with locks, and calculated to be a safe depository of a machine in a private family, and yet be a beautiful article of household furniture.
Vhat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The making the case in the form of a cabinet, which, when opened, will afford space for operating the machine by the treadle, and will form a table for the work by raising the leaves and supporting them by the doors of the cabinet when thrown open, in the manner above described.
2. The construction ofthe folding top, which, when open, furnishes drawers and shelf for the convenience of the operator, as above described. l
