ALGERNON D. SMITH, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-PLANTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,942, dated January 14, 1873.'
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALGERNON D. SMITH, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented anew and useful Compressible Stop '[fbr Hand Corn-Planters, of which the following is a specification:
N atare and Objects of the Invention.
My invention is particularly designed as an attachment to the hand corn-planter originally patented to Charles A. Wakefield on the 25th day of July, 1854; and consists of a compressible and elastic pad or cushion, whose action is to suppress theinjurious concussions incident to the use of this machine.
Description with Reference to the Drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand corn-planter provided with my anti-rattling stops; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section, showing a modified form thereof.
A represents the customary outer box of a Wakefield corn-planter, having the usual slot B for the play of the lower stop, which, as well as the upper stop, is attached to the side of the plunger 0, as in said Wakefields patent.
My improvement relates wholly to the stops, which, instead of being of metal only, are formed as follows: D is a clip of iron or other suitable metal, having one or more orifices, d, for the attaching-screws E and a projecting lip, F, or teat F, and recess G. The office of this clip is to make fast to the plunger a pad or cushion, H, of India rubber, and which receives the blows or impacts incident to the upward and downward strokes of the plunger, and, while serving to properly limit said strokes, prevents the violent concussions which add so much to the labor of working these useful implements; said pads also, by reason of their resilience or elastic force, assist in initiating the return or reverse stroke of the plunger.
While describing the preferred form of my improvement I reserve the right to vary the same while retaining its essential characteristics. For example, the rubber cushions may be secured to the box in the places indicated by the dotted lines 00, and the clips (replaced by simple metal stops) may impinge against the cushions thus secured, just as the heretotore-used metal stops impinged against the case in the said patent; or I may make my stops each of a single piece of rubber.
Leather or gutta-percha or other suitable substance may be employed in place of rubber.
Claim.
I claim as new and of my invention-'- As a new article of manufacture, the compressible and elastic stop D d F or F Gr, for attachment to a hand corn-planter, as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
- A. D. SMITH.
