No. 134,925. Patentedjan.14,1873
(AM PHom-umosmrmcco.mfwssanusnnacsss) 'UNITED' STATEs PATENT FFIC.
DANIEL PIKE, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO CHRISTOPHER SATTERLY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,925, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL PIKE, residing' in New Orleans, parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, have invented a certain Improvefment in Sash Locks or Fasteners, of which the following is a specification:
In the annexed drawin g, Figure l represents perspective view of both my improved sash lock or fastener and portions of a Windowframe and a sash exhibitin g the said lock or fastener in the position it occupies When locked to the latter. Fg. 2 is a similar view of the same devices, showing the sash in an elevated position and the lock disengaged from the slot or indentation in the window-frame, With 'which it is shown in Fig. l as being engaged, but impinging against said frame so as to retain the sash in said position.
i I'dentioal parts in the several fi-gures are designated by corresponding letters.
L This invention relates to an improvement in sash locks or fasteners; and it consists of a slotted wedge-shaped bar, having a coiled or spiral spring, and sliding upon the sash and fitting at one end into the Window-frame, or vice versa, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and specifioally pointed out in the claim.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it both as to construction and operation. In the accompanying drawing, A refers to a Wedge-shaped bar or plate, having a longitudinal slot, a, which receives a pin, al, fastened to the inside of the sash B, and through Which it is susceptible of vertical movement upon said pin, as well as a rotary motion. G is a spiral or coiled spring, fastened at its upper end to the upper end of the plate or bar A, Within the slot a, and at its opposite or lower end to the pin al. By means of this spring upward pressure is imparted to the said plate or bar, by Which it is caused to automatically impinge against the windowframe in holding the sash or window in an elevated position. To the upper end of the bar A is supplied a thumb-piece, which furnishes a convenient means of grasping the same when it is desired to operate it. al refers to a notch cut in the edge of the bar A at the point shown in Figs. l and 2, and is for the purpose of receiving the pin b attachedto the sash B when the upper end of said bar has been thrown around and thrust into the recess or indentation G cut in the frame of the window, Whereby the bar may be firmly held within and locked in place in the indentation, looking the sash or Window down in place. The recess or indentation G is suitably lined with metal, as plainly seen in Fig. 2, to obviate its being enlarged or otherwise impaired. D is the Window-frame.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The slotted bar A, having the notch ot2 and inclosing the spring O, in combination with the pins al and b, as shown and described, and the recess or indentation G, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 12th day of June, A. D. 1872, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL PIKE.
