COMBINATION BED AND CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 192
Application filed December 11, 1919. Serial No. 344,086.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, Dnxrno LYTWYNEO, a citizen of Ukrainia, residing at Hafford, Province of Saskatchewan, and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Beds and Chairs. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination chair and couch and it has for an object to provide a device of this kind which will be of simple construction and capable of easy and rapid adjustment for use either as a chair or couch.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of the device extended in position to form a couch, the cushions, or upholstery, being omitted.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device in the same position.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device in position to form a chair. a
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the means for securing the movable element in its raised position in which it constitutes the back of the chair.
As here shown my improved combination chair and couch comprises two main elements or sections one of which constitutes the seat and the other the back when the device isused as a chair. The first named section comprises a frame made up of the horizontal side rails 1 united at their opposite ends by the rigid cross braces 2. The bottom of this frame has secured thereto a flooring 3.
Secured to the four corners of this frame are the legs 4 which extend upwardlyacross diagonal braces 6 which extend between the legs and the flooring3 and are secured thereto at their ends.
The other section comprises a frame consisting of side rails 10 united at their ends by cross braces 11 this frame being hinged to the seat section by hinges 12 with the side rails ofthe two sections extending in alinement with each other when the device is in the extended position, shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A. flooring or backing 13 is secured to this frame. The free end of this section has attached thereto a pair of legs 14 which are mounted to swing freely on pins 15 projecting from the ends of the side rails 10. The seat section is faced with a suitable cushion 16 and the back section with a cushion 17, these cushions being secured to the respective frames in any suitable manner.
To enable the back section to be adjusted to and held in either the upright or horizontal position, a substantially semi-circular keeper-bar 2() is fixed on one side of the seat section concentric to the hinge axis of the back section and is adapted to be engaged by a bolt 21 carried by the back section, this keeper bar having a notch 22 in which the bolt fits snugly when the back is extended and having an elongated recess 23 in which the bolt engages when the back is raised.
This bolt 21 is slidably mounted on a lateral offset 24 on one of the side rails 10, the bolt being formed with a longitudinal slot 25 through which project a pair of headed pins 26 fixed in the said offset. Hinged to one side of the bolt as at 27 is a latch 28 which extends downwardly across the outer face of the offset 24; and is formed on its free end with a slot 29 in which engages a pin 30 having a laterally projecting end 31, this pin being fixed in the offset to rotate when a degree of force is applied thereto.
Secured at opposite ends to the respective side rails 1 and 10 are a pair of spiral tension springs 32 which serve both to assist in raising the back section from extended position and also cooperate with the recess 23 in the keeper bar 20 to provide a spring back. These springs normally tend to pull the back forward until the bolt 21 engages the forward wall of this recess, as in Fig. 3, while the back may give under pressure until the bolt engages the rear wall of this recess.
When the device is in use as a chair the legs 14 automatically assume a position extending down beside the rails 10, and when the back section is swung down to change the device to a couch these legs maintain the vertical position and engage the floor when the back reaches a horizontal position. As
will be apparent the bolt 21 is prevented from withdrawal from notch 22 or recess 23 by reason of the engagement of pin 30, as an abutment, with the slotted end of latch, the end 31 of this pin projecting over the latch and preventing disengagement of the latter from the pin. To free the latch it is only necessary to turn the pin until its head is alined with the slot 29 in the latch when the latter may be swung clear of the pin to permit of the bolt 21 being retracted.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows A combination chair and couch comprising a seat element, a back element hinged to said seat element, legs adjustably carried by the free end of said seat element a keeper bar secured upon said seat element and curved concentrically t0 the hinge axis of the back element, a bolt carried by the back element, said keeper bar presenting an elongated recess in which said bolt engages to retain the back element in raised position with a limited back and forward movement, and a pair of spiral'tension springs connected at opposite ends to the seat and back elements and normally acting to swing the back element forwardly.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature. 1
