Description
PATENT rrrcn CHARLES B. MCGLYMOND, OF ELDERTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIFFLETREES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. hr3/L75@ dated January 14, 1873.
, to the accompanying drawing and to the let-- ters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in the peculiar construction of the whiffietree-irons, for the purwwp nt' locking and securing the latter to the former.
1o enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of my speciiication, Figure l is a longitudinal section of the trace and whiflietree irons, representing the former secured to the latter; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the trace-irons; and Fig 3 is a transverse section ofthe whifetree-irons at line of Fig. l.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the whifiietree. B represents two iron straps, which are secured to the whiiiietree by means of rivets and a i'errule, C, the ends of the straps B catching over a shoulder7 e, on the tracehook D. The trace-iron F is constructed in two parts, and is held together by means of two or more rivets, k. It is also furnished with an opening, g, into which is inserted the trace-hook D. A recess is made in the trace-iron for a bolt, h, which is held forward by a spiral spring, t'. The trace-iron is also furnished with an opening, m, for inserting a suitable instrument into the notch n of the bolt h for drawing it back, so that the trace-iron may be removed from the tracehook D. L is the opening between the two parts ot' the trace-iron for receiving the tracestrap, which is secured to the said iron by means of rivets. The outer end of the tracehook D is beveled, so that when inserted in the opening g it will force back the bolt h, which will spring forward as soon as the point s passes the end of the bolt, thereby locking the trace-iron upon the trace-hook.
The advantages of my improvement in whiffletree and trace irons will be apparent to persons having an experience in theharnessing of horses to whiftletrees of carriages or wagons.
Having thus described the nature and construction of my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is Whiftletree irons consisting of two straps, B, the outer ends of which clasp the hood D forward of theshoulder or collar e clamped and held together by the ferrule e, the whole constructed and arranged upon the whifiietree A substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
Y C. B. MCCLYMOND.
