To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, EDWARD V. S'roLnn and Hownno Tunasn, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Ptichland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Bedpans, of which the following a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

Our invention aimsto provide a bed pan that may be constructed of metal in contra-- distinction to porcelain or a vitreous material and thus provide a more durable bed pan which we believe may be manufactured at a low cost, since the metal pan may be formed .from sheet metal and afterward enameled or otherwise treated so that it will be non corrodible and may be maintained in a sanitary condition.

Our invention further aims to provide a metallic bed pa n with a hinged main cover or lid and an auxiliary cover or lid, which when closed, will afford an air tight receptacle and yet permit of the entire interior of the bed pan being easily reached and maintained in a clean and sanitary condition.

Our invention further aims to provide a metallic bed pan that may have a main lid slid able on the pan, in contradistinction to a hinged lid, but in both instances provision is made "for sealing the main lid relative to the pan or receptacle.

Our invention still further aims to provide a light weight bed pan that will be hereinafter described and then claimed and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan of the bed pan;

Reference will first be had to Figs. 1 and 2 showing a bed pan comprising a receptacle 1 which is semi-circular in plan, said receptacle having an offset portion 2 communicating with an elbow 8 and said elbow affords a bearing 4 for the inner end of a rotatable valve rod 6, said valve rod extending through a stufling boX 5, carried by the elbow 3. On

the valve rod 6 is a butterfly valve rod 7, and the outer end of said rod has a suitable handle 8 which permits of the valve being operated. It is through the medium of the elbow 3 that the receptacle 1 may be then oughly flushed and cleansed.

The receptacle 1 and the oiiset portion 2 thereof have walls that gradually increasein height from the front portion of the receptaole to the rear portion thereof, including the offset portion 2, and the upper edges of these walls are flanged so as to provide an in clined top wall 9 which is disposed at an acute angle relative to the bottom wall of the receptacle 1. The top wall 9 has a front portion 10 which is depressed, as at 11, and said top wall also has a rear portion 12 which is substantially rectangular in plan so that it may overhang the ofitset portion 2 of the receptacle 1. The overhanging portions of the top wall 9 have depressions 13 similar to the depressions 11 and these depressions are slotted, as at 14 to receive bolts 15 having heads 16 pivotally or hingedly connected to the inner face of a main cover 17 adapted to be clamped on the top wall 9. Winged thumb nuts 18 may be screwed on the bolts 15 to hold the bolts in the slots 1 1 of the depressions 11 and 13..

The main cover 1'? conforms in plan to the shape of the top wall 9 and said main cover has its rear edge suitably hinged, as at 19 to the rear straight edge of the wall 9, so that said main cover may be raised and lowcred relative to the receptacle, 1.

A compressible packing ring or sealing member 20 is suitably mounted on the inclined top plate 9 adjacent the inner marginal edges of the receptacle 1 and the offset portion 2 thereof, so that when the main cover 20 is closed there is air tight or sealed connections between the receptacle and the main cover.

Centrally of the main cover 17 is an opening 21 surrounded by a flange 22 having its'npper edge in a plane at an angle to the main cover 20 so that the upper edges of the flange 22 may merge into the cover 20 at the front edge of the opening 21. The flange 22 affords a seat for an auxiliary cover 23 having a knob or suitable handle 24. The auxiliary cover 23 is adapted to snugly engage the flange 22 and establish practically an air tight connection between the covers 20 and 23. The cover 23 permits 7 may be thrown back and the interior of the receptacle thoroughly cleansed.

Thewallsof the receptacle 25 are rolled and shaped to provide holders 29 for a packing ring or sealingmember 30 and these holders, at-the side walls of the receptacle 25, afford guides 31 for the in-turned side flanges 32 of a main cover 33 said cover being also disposed at an acute angle relative to the bottom of the receptacle 25.-

with no danger of the same being broken should the pan or parts-thereo-f-be accidentally dropped.

While in the drawings wevhave illustrated the preferred embodiments of our invention, it is to be understood thatthe, structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What we claim is 1. A bed pan madeof metal and comprising a receptacle having arear offset por tion, said receptacle having an inclined overhanging top wall, an elbow communicating with the rear oiiset portion of said receptacle, means for closing said elbow, an inclined main cover hinged at the rear edge ofthe overhanging top wall, said main cover including an auXiliary c-over carried by said main cover and disposed at an angle thereto, andmeans carried by the front. edge of said overhanging top wall and by the side edges thereof adjacent the. rear edge of said top wall adapted to be swung into engagement with said top wall andfi'xed relative thereto so as to holdsaid main cover on said receptacle. y
