Be it known that I, Trroams H. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tone-Arms for Talking-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.

This invention relates to tone arms for talking machines, and the object of this invention' is to provide in a talking machine an improved support of mounting for a swinging sound box arm or tone arm.

With this end in view, my invention con- Sists of certain novelties of construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

While the preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, yet it is to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the scope thereof.

Referring to the drawings, one embodiment of my invention is shown applied to a talking machine comprising the usual casing havin a horizontal supporting Wall 1 which carries the usual turn-table 2 for supporting a disk. sound record 3. Arranged above the record support to cooperate with the rec 0rd 3 is any suitable sound box a, which is pivoted in the well known manner by means of a connecting tube 5, to the free smaller end of tapering sound box arm or tone arm 6 with which it communicates. The free end of the tone arm 6 extends in a substantially horizontal direction and the larger end 7 of the tone arm is curved downwardly through an arc of about ninety degrees, terminating in a vertically disposed portion 8.

A tubular bushing 9 is provided which is secured by means of screws 10 or the like, around an aperture in the wall 1 of the cas- 1ng. This bushing projects above the supporting wall and is provided with a flange 11 integral therewith, which rests upon the upper surface of the wall and by means of which it is secured thereto.

F or rotatably connecting the vertically disposed portion 8 of the tone arm 6 to the bushing 9, a vertical stud 12 is employed, the headed end of which supports an apertured bridge 13, which is integrally formed with the interior of the vertically disposed portion 8 of the tone arm 6, as clearly indicated in the drawings. The other end of the stud 12 passes through an apertured boss 14 located 011 the exterior of the downwardly curved end 7 of the tone arm. The free end of the stud 12 is preferably shouldered and screw-threaded as at 15, and is received by and passesthrough the apertured end of a supporting bracket 16, one end of which, by means of screws or the like, is preferably wall 17 of the talking machine casing. A nut 18, which has screwthreaded engagement with the screw-threaded end 15 of the stud 12, secures the parts in their adjusted and operative position.

It will be noted that the end of the vertically disposed portion 8 of the tone arm 6 fits snugly, but is freely rotatable in the upper end of the bushing 9, and that the innor end 1.9 of the usual sound horn is designed to pass through the apertured hori zontal wall 1 and is also fitted into the lower end of the bushing 9,'as clearly indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

In this manner the tone arm 6 is rotatably mounted upon the stud 12, which is secured to the bracket 16 in the manner above described, thereby supporting the tone arm to swing about the stud 12.

Experience has demonstrated that the organization above described is a highly efli cient one, and while I have shown the preferred embodiment of my present invention, I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as obvious modifications thereof, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made by any skilled mechanic, and such departures from what is herein set forth, I consider within the scope and terms of my claims.
