JOSEPH Gr. MOOIVIY, F ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA,
WRENCH MECHANISM.
Spcciucation of Letters Patent.
Patented July (i, 1920..
Application filed February 28, 1919. Serial` No. 279,760.
To all fic/tom t may] concern:
Be 1t known that l, Josnrrr Gr. Moor/rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erle,
`in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania,` have invented new and" useful lmprovements in Wrench Mechanism, of which `the following is a specification.`
`lhis invention relates `to wrench mechanism and consists 1n certain improvements 1n the construction thereof as will be herethe claims.
In the assembling of tubes for pneumatic tires it is necessary to applyavalve stem and to secure the stem in place by a nut.
"lhis nut is run down a rather long stem and should exert an approximately uniform pressure on the parts to assure a complete closure `on the stem. The present invention is particularly designed for accomplishing this purpose. c
The inventionis illustrated in the accom` panying drawings as follows Figure 'l shows a side elevation of the grench, partly in section, on the line 1-1 in lig. 2.
Fig. 2 an end elevation ofthe wrench. Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 in Fig.` 1; 1 marks a tube, 2 a valve stem for the tube, 3 a head on the valve stem, 41 a closure plate on the valve stem, and 5 `a nut which is usually placed on the valve stem for se-` curing the stem in place on the tube.
A drivewrench 6 is mounted 0in a sleeve 7. The sleeve is frictionally driven from` agear 9. The gear has a screw-threaded flange 11 extending from it on which a flange `nut is secured, the flange nut operating on the flange l2 of the sleeve 7` and holding the flange 12 with adjusted ten `and is provided with a `nut `17 by means of whichit is clamped on the mounting. A
key 18 is also provided for preventing the holding wrench turning in the mounting.
The holding wrench has a tapered opening 19 leading to the Wrench socket 20, the
wrench socket being shaped to engage the flats usually provided on valve stems 2.
A gear 21 is mounted on the drive shaft 22 of a motor 23. The gear 2l meshes with the gear 9 and is as the wrench is ordinarily operated constantly in motion. The motor 23 is mounted on a base 24 fromwhich the mounting extends.
. ln operation the operator starts a nut on the stem 2, inserts the stem in the wrench 5 and as the nut progresses the stem is carried into the socket of the holding wrench which holds the stem 2 and at the same time locates the head and plate on the stem in `proper relation tothe tube 1. As the nut a holdingwrench, the holding wrench being mounted with relation to the driving wrench to hold a screw on which a nut is being driven by the driving wrench.
2. Inl a wrench mechanism, the combina tion of a driving wrench; a friction drive mechanism having a predetermined driving engagement for said driving wrench; and
a holding wrench, the holding wrench being l mounted with relation to the driving wrench to hold a screw on which a nut is being driven by the driving wrench.
3. ln a wrench mechanism, the combination of a mounting; a holding wrench secured to said mounting; a drive gear journaled on the holding wrench; and a driving wrench frictionally driven from the drive gear and having a predetermined driving engagement, said holding wrench being in alinement with the driving wrench and in position to receive a screw stem inserted in the driving wrench.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand.
