Be it known that I, Pn'rnn A. BISHOP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, county of Bristol, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tension Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spooling equipment and particularly to a bobbin holding tension device for yarn winding, and especially filling winding. The difficulty of securing satisfactory tension in winding yarn from a bobbin onto a spool has been heretofore recognized in the art, and various means have been devised in the effort to secure wholly efficient and satisfactory results.
In my present invention I provide a device readily adaptable to standard machines and combining to give a uniform and effective tension throughout the draft from a carrier to a spool in winding.
In the form shown herein as illustrative of my invention, I have provided. a simple and efficient device and one capable of ready installation and at low cost.
Throughout the specification and drawings like reference characters are employed to indicate corresponding parts, and in the drawings Figure I is a side elevation showlng my device in its relation to the adjacent parts of the spooling machine.

My device comprises a bobbin frame 1 1n the form of a slightly curving arm having at one end clamping jaws 2 adapted to embrace the bobbin holder rod 3 of the spooling machine. Adjacent the jaws and on the side of the curvature of the arm 1 is a small bracket 1 on which is mounted a conical stud 4 upon which is carried the bobbin. At the opposite end of the arm 1 and overhanging the axis of the stud 4 is a guide 12 notched at 13 to receive the yarn.
Projecting from the arm 1 is an extension 7 formed with a head 7 which is slotted at 9 to permit the longitudinal adjustment of the axis bolt 15 on which is mounted a friction or braking drum 8. Between the drum 8 and the head 7 is interposed a fiat arm 16 Specification of Letters Patent.

My device is adjustably mounted by a set screw 2 in proper alinement with a spool B and its guide A. The drum 8 is adjusted longitudinally in the slot to bring the'friction Stud 10 substantially below the guide A and the angle of the stud adjusted to enforce the desired degree of friction.
The yarn is drawn from the bobbin through the guide notch 13 of the arm and is given a half turn around the stud 10, thence over and about the drum over the guide and to the spool B, in which it is wound in the usual manner. The amount of tension exerted by the drum depends upon the radial position occupied by the stud arm 10 which thus determines the amount of yarn or the amount of periphery of the drum on which frictional contact is exerted.
A spirally grooved porcelain guide knob 14 may be set on the side of the arm 1 to give slight additional friction in filling, winding and also to guide the yarn in its run from the notched guide 12 on the end of the arm 1 to the stud or button 10.
I am aware that various frictional devices have been employed, but the construction disclosed in my present invention is believed to be novel in its own structure and in its combination with spooling and guiding devices in which it affords right lines of travel forthe yarn so that the yarn may be laid smoothly and tightly on the spools.
Various modifications in the form and construction of my device may obviously be made, all without departing from the spirit of my invention if within the limits of the appended claims.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, an arm, a bobbin support at one side of said arm, a guide on the opposite end of said arm, and axially alining said bobbin spool, a friction drum mounted on said arm and adjustable longitudinally thereof, a stud arm circumferentially adjustable relative to said drum, and a stud on said arm parallel to the axis of said drum, a guide disposed beyond said stud and drum, and a spooling device disposed beyond said guide.
