IMPROVEMENT In GATE-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. B Sibdll, dated December 31, 1872.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS BAR'rLoW, of Richmond, county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented a certain Improvement in GateLatches, of which the following is a specication:
My invention relates to an improvement in gate-latches wherein two latches are used, said latches being pivoted at their rear ends to studs which are cast with the plate which carries the latches and spring, and is secured to the gate, the outer ends of the latches falling into notches made in lugs which are attached to a plate which is .fastened to the gatepost, said plate being adjustable.
The drawing represents a gate with my latch attached thereto.
A A are the gate-posts; B, the gate; and C, the adjustable plate attached to the post, and having the catches D D attached, vinto which the latches are pressed lby the spring I. This spring has a loop at its rear end which its over the stud Cr cast on the plate E. This plate E also has the studs F F, to which the rear ends ofthe latches are pivoted, the spring I holding the latches apart and into the catches D D. The plate E also has a lug, L, attached to its front end between the latches, which lug serves as a stop for the latches when pressed together and out of the catches D D. The lugs M M on the latches are for the double purpose of pressing the latches together and releasing them from their catches, and also serve to pull the gate open. The slots N N in the plate C are for the purpose of adjusting the plate as may be required. There is an outside plate or covering to the latches and spring, which is held in place -by a screw in the stud G, to which the spring is attached, the whole being held in place on the gate by means of wood-screws through the holes P.
I am aware of the double latches of C. C. Vllalconib and J. I). Woodcock, the English patent of G. Carter, and that the adjustable plate C is not new, taken separately.
I do not claim double latches held into their catches by a spring; neither do I claim latches and spring inclosed in a hollow casing; but
Vhat I claim is- The plate E having the studs F F, G, and L cast thereto, and carrying the latches H H and spring I, in combination with the plate C having the catches D I) attached, all operating together, substantially as described.
CORNELIUS BARTLOW.
