APPABATUS FOB REBORING CYLINDERS.

Be it known that I, EDWARD E. LARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thompson, in the county of \Vinnebago and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for lieboring Cylinders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a i paratus for reboring cylinders.
An important object of the invention is to provide such an apparatus which is portable and may be operated either by hand or by machine.
A further object is to provide such an ap paratus wherein the cutter used in reboring the cylinder may be removed to try the fit of the new piston without in any manner destroying the set of the apparatus.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent throughout the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings,'wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, and wherein like numerals deslgnate like parts throughout,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my apparatus in position for reboring a cylinder,
the cylinder being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectlon taken through my apparatus.

Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the rod used to connect my apparatus with a power drive, and I Fig. (i is a sectional view illustrating the manner in which the new piston may be inserted to ascertain whether the new bore is of the correct size.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a shaft. j
A guide shaft 11 is provided having screw threads formed thereon. The lower end of the guideshaft is provided with an enlargement 12. A kerf 14 is formed in the en largement 12 communicating with the bore 13 thereof and forming spaced arms 15 and 16. A bolt 17 extends through one of these arms and has threaded engagement with the,

A reamer 18 is provided having internal screw threads 19 adapted to en age the threads of the guide shaft 11. Mounted above the reamer 18 is a sleeve 20 secured to the reamer 18 as at 21. The sleeve 20 has an open top 22 and is provided in its side walls with diametrically opposed slots 23. The sleeve is also provided adjacent its upper ends with alined openings 24- adapted to receive a transverse bar 25for use when the device i operated by hand power.
A means for connecting the apparatus for use' in connection .with a power drive is shown comprising a shaft 26 provided in the ends thereof with transverse openings 27 adapted to receive a wrist pin 28. About the end'of the wrist pins are mounted rollers 29 held in position by washers 30 and screws 31. The. rollers upon the wrist pin at the lower end of the shaft engage in the slots 20 of the sleeve, and the rollers upon the wrist pin at the upper end of the shaft engage in slots 32 formed in, a sleeve adapted for attachment'for the power shaft 35 of any suitable machine as by means of said screws 34: or the like.
The operation of my device is as follows:
The shaft 10 is mounted in the journals of the crank shaft of the engine, split bush ings 35 of various sizes being provided for this purpose. The shaft 11 is then placed in position and alined in. the center of the cylinder 37. The cutter 18 is then placed in position upon the upper end of the shaft 11 and power applied to the sleeve to rotate the cutter. After a cut of sufficient depth has been made, the cutter 18 may be removed A As many changes are possible in the shape, size and arrangement of the various parts shown, I do not limit myself to the specific structure described but may make any changes without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
What I claim is:
1. In apparatus for reboring cylinders of engines, a shaft adapted to be mounted in the crank shaft bearings of the engine, a threaded guide shaft adapted to be secured at one end-to said shaft and alined with the bore of the cylinder, the other end of said guide shaft being free from connection with the cylinder, a boring element provided with internal screw threads adapted to engage the threads of said guide shaft, and means for rotating said boring element, said guide shaft being of such length as to permit the insertion of the piston while in position.
2. In apparatus for reboring cylinders of engines, a shaft adapted to be mounted in the crank shaft bearings of the engine, a threaded guide shaft adapted to be secured to said shaft and alined with the bore of the cylinder, a boring element provided with internal screw threads adapted to engage the threads of said guide shaft, a slotted sleeve secured to said boring member, a second sleeve adapted for attachment to a power shaft, each of said sleeves being provided with diametrically opposed slots, and a connecting member for said sleeves having portions extending into said slots.

In apparatus for reboring cylinders of engines, a shaft adapted to be mounted in the crank shaft bearings of the engine, a threaded guide shaft adapted to be secured to said shaft and alined with the bore of the eylinder,a boring element provided with internal screw threads adapted to engage the threads ofsaid guide shaft, a slotted sleeve secured to said boring member, a second sleeve adapted; for attachment to a power shaft each of said sleeves being provided with diametrically opposed slots and a connecting member for said sleeves having rotatable portions extending into said slots, said guide shaft being of such length as to permit the insertion of the piston while in position.
4. In apparatus for reboring cylinders of engines, a shaft adapted to be mounted in the crank shaft bearing of the engine, a threaded guide shaft adapted to be secured tosaid shaft and alined with the bore of the cylinder, a boring element provided with internal screw threads adapted to engage the threads of said guide shaft, a slotted sleeve secured to said boring member a second sleeve adapted for attachment to a power shaft, each of said sleeves being provided with diametrically opposed slots and means connecting said sleeves comprising a shaft provided in its ends with transverse openings adapted to receive a pair of wrist pins, said wrist pins extending into the slots of said sleeves, and rollers mounted upon said wrist pins and operating within said slots. 7
