Be it known that l, Jacon cross, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Ansgar, in the county of lilitchell and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Combined Air Regulators and Deflectors, oi which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an attachment for use in cooking stoves, and more particularly to the class of combined air regulators and deflectors for oil burning wick stoves.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device or attachment oi this character, wherein the same when placed within the stove relative to the air intake about the burner regulates the inflow of air and deflects the same from a direct course about the flame when the burner is lighted for increasing the combustion and to spread said flame for assuring maximum heating qualities with a minimum consumption of oil, the combustion being improved when the flame is low or high and without resultant smoking thereof.
Another object of the invention is the provision oi a device or attachment of this character, wherein a maximum fullness of flame is assured and the heat therefrom materially increased both in intensity and volume, the burner being maintained cool below the flame issuing therefrom to avoid overheating oi said burner and the air admitted about such burner is deflected from a direct dra'lt upon the flame to avoid the contracting oi the latter and thereby procuring the best results in the use of the stove.
A further object or the invention is the provision of a device or attachment of this character, wherein the air admitted to the combustion chamber about the burner in the stove is regulated and controlled for supplying the requisite quantity of air and directing the inflow of the same for improving'the combustion during the use of the stove to assure maximum heat and elimination of it still further object of the invention is the provision of a device or attachmentof this character, wherein. it is readily applied about the burner within an oil stove and can be removed when the occasion requires to permit the cleaning thereof or said stove, the device being of novel construction to regulate and deflect the air in a proper course Specification of Letters Patent.

l Vith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereuntoappended.
It is to be understood, of course, that changes, variations and modifications may be made in the invention, such as come properly in the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention, or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is the fragmentary side elevation of a wick burner and chimney, for oil cooking stove, showing the collar for supporting the chimney upon the burner, with the device constructed in accordance with the invention applied, the chimney being partly broken away and supporting collar being in section.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device removed from the chimney.

Referring to the drawing in detail, A. designates a portion of a wick burner which of any approved form and B a portion of a chimney of a construction ordinarily used in oil burning wick cook stoves. Located within the burner A is the usual oil wick C above which is arranged a flame spreader D which may be of any ordinary well known construction.
The burner A has formed exteriorly thereon an annular bead constituting a shoulder 10 for the mounting of a collar 11 thereabout to support the chimney B which at its lower end is formed with a suitable central opening for telescopically receiving therein the V gers.

The chimney B at its end engaged with the collar 11 is formed with a circular rim '13 constituting a bottom shaped to provide an annular trough 14 having at its inner periphery an upstanding vertical flange 15 for frictional engagement with the collar 11, the rim 13 being formed at intervals with air inlet openings or apertures 16, which may be of any desirable size to admit air about the burner A interiorly of the chimney B.
If found desirable the collar 11 may be pro-' vided with suitable apertures or openings 17 for augmenting the admission of air into the said chimney.
Adapted to be located within the trough 14 in the bottom 13 of the chimney B is the attachment which comprises a split annular member 18, preferably made from sheet metal, although the same may be made from any other material if found desirable and this member has at its upper edge a series of outturned upperly divergent deflector wings or fingers 19, each being formed with an outwardly tapered free or outer extremity 20 whereby the wings or fingers adjacent each other of the series present therebetween substantially V shaped gaps 21 serving as air spaces or ways, concentrically of said mem-" her, it being understood, of course, that the formation of the extremities 20 can be varied r can be varied so as to increase or decrease the spaced relation thereof in the outward divergent disposition of said wings or fin- Thevmember 18 at the end 22 has one of the wings orfingers, 19, partly removed to provide a stop nib 22, the latter to coact with the adjacent or underlying wing or finger 19 at the other end of said member a 18 to preserve the circular formation of the member 18 when placed within the trough 14 and to hold the ends of said member in registering overlapped relation to each other.
, The wing or finger 19 next to the stop nib 22 is curved to provide a latch 23 for engagement with the body of the chimney B at the juncture of the bottom 13 therewith so as to hold the device properly seated within the trough 14 when placed therein and to avoid any possibility of displacement thereof in the trough.
- In applying the device the same is intro-- be disposed in their series in upperly divergent relation circumferentially about the collar 11 to lie above the air inlet openings or apertures 16 in the bottom 13 of the chimney for action upon the air entering the openings or apertures 16 to deflect said air in the direction of the outside wall of the chimney B, the air being regulated in its course from the trough 14 upwardly through the gaps 21 and between the wings or fingers 19 for circulation within the combustion chamber formed by the chimney B to effect an improved combustion and the spreading of the flame with resultant issuance of maximum heat and a minimum consumption of fuel.
The device with the wings or fingers 19 when placed within the bottom of the chimney B serves as a combined air regulator and deflector for the air I flowing through the openings or apertures 16 in the bottom of the chimney B to the point of combustion of the fuel and thereby properly direct the air into the combustion chamber for effecting a materially stronger indirect draft up a through the chimney with a resultant more perfect combustion, and increase of heat with a minimum consumption of fuel and at the same time eliminating smoke and odor issuing from the chimney;
It is clearly apparent that by the use of the device, a quicker heat transit is assured and a proper" current of cool air is maintained about the burner below the point of the flamefor the cooling of said burner to preventthe overheating thereof. Furthermore the air. is properly deflected into the combustion chamber in the chimney B to avoid direct draft therein for an improved combustion and a heat increase'without anyincrease in the consumption of oil when the stove is in use, 7'
In Fig. 4 of the drawing there is shown a slight modification of the invention where in the bottom 24 of the chimney 25 for the cooking stove hasits vertical wall 26 formed with the device, the wings or fingers 27 being integral with the vertical flange 26 and are constructed and arranged correspondingly to the wings or fingers 19 hereinbefore erably made from a single length of wire,
the convolutions or coils 30 being arranged in properly spaced relation to each other and. the ends of the wire are formed with inter-fitted links 31 for connecting said ends together to provide the annular member 29. The member 29 is adapted to be fitted within the trough 32 in the bottom 33 of the chim ney 34 as is clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing. The convolutions or coils 30 of the member 29 overlie the air inlet openings or apertures 35 in the bottom 33 of the chimney $34 to act upon the air for regulating the same and deflecting the course thereof to the combustion chamber in the chimney for the admission of the air concentrically about the flame and adjacent the outside wall of the chimney and this member 29 operates in a manner similar to the other forms of the device hereinbefore described.
It will be apparent that by reason of the annular shape of the member 29 the coils or convolutions 30 thereof are spread apart a greater distance at the outer periphery of the same than at its inner periphery so that a greater amount oi air passes between the coils or convolutions at the outer circun'rl erence of the member than at the inner periphery, thus causing the air to flow with greater volume upwardly next to the body of the chimney 24- for action upon the flame to spread the same and this course of the air has a tendency to improve the combustion in the chimney and to intensify the heat of the flame when the burner is lighted.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the invention will be clearly understood, and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with an oil burning cook stove having a burner and a chimney, the same provided With air inlet openings, of an attachment comprising a deflector in the chimney above the air openings for retarding the direct course of air admitted through the openings and deflecting said air into said chimney toward its side wall concentrically of the burner.
2. An attachment of the character described comprising a circular member adapted to be disposed over the air inlet openings in the chimney of a cooking oil stove and having portions arranged relative to each other for efl'ecting the changing of the air course through said openings and directing said air adjacent to the side wall of the chimney.
3. An attachment of the character de scribed comprising a split circular member and series of radially disposed upwardly divergent wings on said member and having tapered free extremities providing air gaps therebetween.
