PLUMBING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED APR. l I9I9.

CARL WERNER, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
PLUMBING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lvlay 25, 1920,
Application filed April 1, 1919. Serial No. 286,661,
To all 'whomit may concern Be it known that I, CARL WERNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and btate of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements ,in Plumbing Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. r l
This invention relates to plumbing de vices, and it relates more specifically to an improved device for plumbing posts, studs, etc, having rectangular cross sections.
()ne object of this invention is to prov de an improved device of this character which can be quickly and easily operated by an inexperienced person, without additional equipment or aid, in such manner as to obtain perfect accuracy, under widely varying conditions, in plumbing either one or all sides of a postsimultaneously.
Other objects and advantages may become apparent to persons who read the following details of description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating my improved plumbing device in its effective position on a post to, be plumbed.
Fig. 2 is an elevation, view from a point at right angles to the view point of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view along the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a similar sectional view along the line l-4 of Fig. 2. i
Referring to these drawings in detail, in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several views, the device consists broadly of a plumb-support 5, a plumb-register 6 and a plumb 7. The plumb-support comprises a clamp formed witha rightsangle portion 8 which fits against any two adJac-ent sides F of a post which isv right angled in cross section, such a portion'being indicated at 9, and a hand-screw 1O bears against another side of the post so as to removably secure the plumb-support to the post in a definite position with relation to the cross sectional area of the post, regardless of the longtudinal portion of .the post to which it is attached. Moreover, the support 5 comprises a wing or plate 11.which is apertured to receive an eye 12 which is positioned a distance from the work being plumbed,
equal to at least'onehalf the diameter of the plumb bob to be used and to which the plumb-line of the plumb is attached. Obvlously, however, the line itself can be extended through the plate 11 and secured by means of a knot in the plumb-line, and therefore, the numeral 12 may be considered as indicating the point at which the plumbline is connected to the plate 11.
The plumb-register 6 comprises a rightangle portion 8 which may be identical in shape with that of the support 5, and the same is true of the hand-screw 10 of the members 5 and 6. However, the member 6 is provided with a wing or plate 13 which may be somewhat different inshape from the plate 11, though not essentially different in shape. The essential difference between the plates 11 and 13 is that the latter is provided with a plumb-point 14, the latter being disposed at the intersection of two visible lines 15 and 16. It will be seen that the line 15 is parallel with one side of the right-angle portion 8, and the line 16 is substantially parallel with the other side of the angle portion 8, that is, if the line 16 were extended toward the right, or the plane of the far side of the post 9 were extended to the left, in Fig. 4, theselines would, be parallel to one another. Therefore, if the plumb-bob 7 registers with the point 14, when the device is attached to a post as illustrated, it is known that all sides of the post are plumb, whereas if the plumb-bob registers with line 16 and not with line 15, it is known that only the sides of the post which are parallel with the line 16 are plumb, and if the plumb-bob registers with the line 15 and not'with the line 16, it is known that only the sides of the post which are parallel with the line 15 are plumb.
From the foregoing description, it is obvious that this device is 'of very simple and comparatively inexpensive construction, that itcan be conveniently carried in a small space, and that any person of ordinary ability can quickly and easily attach the same to a post, door-frame, window-frame or other upright part of a building,'an'd very quickly and accurately determine when one orv all sides of a post or the like are plumb. 4 Although I have described this embodiment of my invention very specifically, it is not intended to limit this invention to these exact details of construction and arrangement of parts, but I am entitled to make appropriate changes within the scope of the lnventive idea disclosed in the foregoing description and following claim.
What I claim as my invention is:
A plumbing device comprising a substantially U-shaped clamp removably attachable to the work to be plumbed, a plate extending laterally from said clamp, a plumb bob secured to and depending from said plate at a point spaced from the work a distance equivalent to at least one half,
of the diameter greatest of the plumb bob,
a second clamp to be spaced below the other clamp and removably attachable to the my hand CARL WERNER.
