BRAKE-LINING DRESSING.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. CALHOUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amsterdam, county of Montgomery, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brake Lining Dressing, ofawhich the following is a specification.
The object of my invention' is the production of a composition or dressing to be applied to the linings of brakes, snubbers and the like, for preserving and protecting the fabric forming the snubber or the body of the brake-lining, and for causing the brakes to act smoothly and Without chatter or squeak.
My composition consists of a mixture of castor-oil, neats-foot oil, crude oil, fullers earth and oil of citronella.
The relative quantities of these ingredients may be varied to meet different conditions in use.
I have obtained most satisfactory general results by combining the ingredients in the following proportions:
Castor oil 2 ounces Neats-foot oil 4 ounces Crude oil 4 ounces Fullers earth 5 ounces Oil of citronella 1 ounce These ingredients are thoroughly mixed together and the mixture may be applied Specification of Letters Patent.

with a brush, stick or other device to the surface of the brake lining or of the snubber or other frictional device to be treated.
The oil of citronella may be. omitted or replaced by any other odoriferous oil or other substance which will readily mix with the other ingredients.
My dressing applied to a snubber or brake-lining keeps the fabric thereof soft and pliable and protects the same from moisture, but does not lubricate the same to such an extent as to interfere with the proper working of the snubber or brake.
In a case of a brake-lining containing metal wires my dressing makes the brake act smoothly and without chatter or squeak without material loss of friction. In like manner it also renders the action of the snubber smooth and uniform in the engagement of the snubber-strap with metal surfaces.
Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A composition consisting of castor oil neats-foot oil, crude oil and fullers earth.
2. A composition consisting of the following ingredients in approximately the proportions named,-castor oil two ounces, neats-foot oil four ounces, crude oil four ounces, fullers earth five ounces.
