Description
C. E. WAKE.
SPARK PLUG HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 12, 1919.

W/T/VESSES IN VE IV 70/? A TTORNE Y8 nNrrEo STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. WAKE, OF WALLA WALLA, WASHINGTON.
SPARK-PLUG HOLDER.
Application filed September 12, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHAnLns E. VAKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Walla Walla, in the county of lValla Walla and State of We shington, have invented a new and Improved Spark-Plug Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in spark plug holders, an object of the invention being to provide a device for conveniently handling spark plugs without danger or discomfort from the hot plugs, and without the necessity of soiling the hands.
A. further object is to provide a spark plug holder which grips the plug but which can be easily released therefrom by pressing the handle members toward each other.
VJith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements.
Fig. 2 is a View in transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
1 represents a spark plug which is of the ordinary hexagonal shape at its outer end to receive a wrench to turn the same.
My improved device comprises two members 2 and 3, preferably of sheet metal and curved transversely in tie arc of a circle throughout vthe greater portion of their lengths.
At a point between their ends, the members 2 and 3 are made with perforated lugs 4t, projecting from the edges of the members. The lugs of the respective members overlap each other and receive rivets 5 therein pivotally connecting the members together.
The members 2 and 3 at one end constitute gripping jaws 6 which are made with flat surfaces at an angle to each other to conform to the shape of the spark plug 1.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1920.
Serial No. 323,233.
The other ends of the members 2 and 8 constitute a handle, and a coiled spring 7 is positioned between them and held against accidental displacement by relative long pins 8 projecting through the members and into the ends of the spring 7.
The spring has sufiicient tension to hold the plug during its cleaning operation and during the greater portion of its turning movement to unscrew the plug from the cylinder and replace the same. A Wrench is of course necessary for the initial movement in unscrewing and the final movement in tightening the plug.
With this device hot and dirty plugs can be conveniently handled without danger or discomfort.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture a spark plug holder, comprising two members, both members of sheet metal curved transversely, perforated lugs at both edges of both members, the lugs of one member positioned beside the lugs of the other member, pivotal devices located in the perforated lugs of the adjacent members, and said members at one end angular transversely.
2. As a new article of manufacture a spark plug holder, comprising two members, both members of sheet metal curved transversely, perforated lugs at both edges of both members, the lugs of one member positioned beside the lugs of the other member, pivotal devices located in the perforated lugs of the adjacent members, said members at one end angular transversely, and a coiled spring located between the members at their other ends.
CHARLES E. WAKE.
