Description

.I. A. GARCIA.
JACK CENTERING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED Aue.13. 19x9.
1,337,065. Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
A TTORNEYS INVENTOR JOSE ANCIRA GARCIA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
JACK-CENTERING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
Application filed August 13, 1919. Serial No. 317,310.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osn ANoIRA Granola, a citizen of the United States, and a res1- dent of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful ack Centering Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptlon.
This invention relates to jack center ng devices and has for an object to provide an improved construction wherein a ack of any desired type may be positioned approximately in the right place and then adjusted to the exact position for operation in the usual manner.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a jack centering and moving device wherein the jack may be used to raise a piece of machinery or other article and then move the machine or other article laterally a short distance.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means which will lift comparatively heavy machinery and shift the same short distances and then replace the machinery on a suitable support.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section through a jack centering and moving device embodying the invention, the same being taken on line 11 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through Fig. 1 on line 2-2.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the jack centering device shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a jack of any desired kind which is designed to be secured to a platform 2 in any desired way, as for instance by bolts 3. The platform 2 is a comparatively heavy piece of metal which is designed to support whatever weight the jack 1 may raise. The plate 2 is provided with laterally extending flanges 4: and 5 which fit into slots or grooves 6 and 7 in the traveling carriage 8. As indicated in Fig. 2 suitable registering slots are provided in the plate 2 and the carriage 8 for receiving anti-friction balls 9 and 10 whereby the plate may slide freely back and forth guided by the flanges 4 and 5 and grooves 6 and 7. In order to positively move the plate 2 back and forth together with jack 1 a lug 11 is either rigidly secured to or formed integral with plate 2, said lugs having a threaded aperture therein through which the screw 12 passes, said screw being journaled in the opposite sides of the frame 8 as shown in Fig. 1. Whenever a suitable key or crank is connected to the square end of the screw 12 and said screw is rotated, plate 2, jack 1 and the matter supported thereby will all move transversely of the base 13. It will be noted that the screw 12 is provided with shoulders at the opposite end of the carriage 8 so that the plate 2 and jack 1 will be moved together with any weight thereon. In connection with moving the weight it is evident that the jack 1. may be used merely as an elevating means, or the jack may be used with the plate 2 and associate parts as an elevating and transporting means.
In placing heavy machinery it is often necessary to shift the same a short distance,
for instance three or four inches, this re quires a large amount of work and lifting mechanism ordinarily, whereas by using jack 1, plate 2 and associate parts a heavy piece of machinery may be raised slightly and thus transported a few inches. If an additional movement is desired the machinery must be lowered and base 13 and associate parts shifted after which the operation must be repeated and in this way the machinery will be moved an appreciable distance with a minimum effort and with a minimum number of assistants. It will, of course, be noted that plate 2 will move the jack 1 and parts carried thereby in one direction only, to move the jack in a direction at right angles to the movement of plate 2 carriage 8 is provided which has a depending lug 14E rigidly secured thereto or formed integral therewith, said lug being threaded for receiving the screw 15 journaled in the base 13. Whenever this screw is rotated the carriage 8 and everything supported thereby will be moved longitudinally of screw 15, which is in a direction at right angles to the movement of the screw 12. By operating both the screws 12 and 15 a diagonal movement may be secured so that the article carried by the jack may be positioned accurately and easily in any desired position.
The base 13 is provided with grooves 16 and 17 for receiving anti-friction balls 18, said balls being positioned in suitable grooves 19 and 20 in the carriage 8, said grooves falling short of the ends of the carriage whereby the balls are retained automatically in place. In order to guide the carriage 8 same is provided with flanges 21 and 22 projecting into suitable grooves 23 and 24 in the upper part of base 13. This base is preferably a single piece of metal provided with suitable supporting legs 25.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A jack centering device comprising a base or platform, and means for supporting a jack on said base or platform, said means being movable in two directions one movement being at right angles to the other whereby the jack may be moved to any point within the limitations of the device.
2. A device of the character described comprising a supporting plate, means for moving the same in one direction, a carriage for moving the supporting plate in a direction at right angles to this first movement, and a base for supporting said carriage and said plate together with means for moving the carriage and plate.
3. A device of the character described comprising a base, a carriage movably mounted on said base, means for shifting said carriage back and forth in one direction on said base, a plate movably mounted on said carriage means for moving said plate back and forth in a direction transversely of the movement of the carriage, and means on said plate for elevating an article whereby said article may be elevated and transported to any point within the scope of the device.
a. A device of the character described comprising a base having a pair of facing grooves, a carriage fitted on the base with a pair of flanges extending into said grooves, said carriage being formed with a depending threaded member, a fixed rotatable screw extending through the threaded member whereby when the screw is rotated the carriage will be moved, said carriage having a pair of facing grooves positioned at right angles to the first mentioned grooves, a plate formed with means extending into the grooves on said carriage, said plate having a depending threaded member, a fixed rotatable screw mounted on said carriage and extending through the threaded member on said plate, and an elevating member connected with said plate.
5. The combination with a jack of a support therefor constructed to move the jack in any direction in a horizontal plane, said construction comprising a pair of superimposed earriages, said carriages moving at right angles to each other with one carriage supporting the other carriage, and independent means for shifting the position of said carriages while the jack is supporteo thereby.
