which the following is a specification.
My invention relates specifically to an improvement in the arrangement of teeth in a device of the nature indicated, and in the relative sizes of the opposite ends of the gripping passages formed therein. i
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the character indicated formed of two symmetrical, opposed supplemenary jaws of exceptional gripping power.
With the above object in view, the invention consists in the novel and useful provision, formation, construction and relative arrangement of parts, members and features, all as hereinafter described, shown in the drawing and finally pointed out in the claim.

Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates one of the supplementary jaws having an outwardly projecting bottom flange 2 and an outwardly pro jecting upper flange 3. The inner face of jaw 1 is recessed throughout its length and formed into a plurality of longitudinally extending teeth 4. In the inner face of jaw 1 are also formed a plurality of gripping surfaces designated as 5--67-8910 respectively and extending throughout its width. in vertical relation to'teeth 4. The recess 5 is oblong in plan and is provided with teeth as shown at 11 formed so as to project inwardly toward the adjacent end of jaw 1. The gripping surfaces 678-9 and 10 are of various sizes, each one being smaller at itsv upper end than at its lower end, the enlargement of the lower end in each case being indicated in dotted lines and designated by the proper numeral and the letter a.

In use the device is held in position by the jaws of the vise, these being indicated in dotted lines at 12, in Fig. 1. If, now, a head is to be worked upon a bolt as 13, the same is placed in position and clamped into place, the greater pressure being brought to bear at the top adjacent the head being worked, the lower end of the gripping surfaces being used barely contacting with the bolt and therefore merely assisting in holding the same in a vertical position. During the working of the bolt the upper ends of the grippmg surfaces bite into the metal necessitating tightening of the clamps, this tightening of the clamps being necessary quite frequently during the time in which the bolt is being worked. If both the upper and lower ends of the gripping surfaces were of the same size the upper ends of the said surfaces where most of the strain and wear comes would quickly mutilate the metal and permit it to slip and move in its place. If, however, the lower ends of the surfaces are larger than the upper ends the tightening process can be carried on until the work is finished, the lower ends of the gripping surfaces coming into full play at a time when the upper ends are firmly seated in the metal being worked and therefore practically eliminating the possibility of injury to the lower portion of the said bolt.
In recess 5 the teeth 4 on both sides project in the same direction, therefore a pressure to turn the bolt in either direction will cause the teeth to apply a positive bite thereto that is more effective than if the ordinary type of tooth is used. In this form of gripping surface especially are the different sized openings desirable because thebiting of the teeth into the upper part mentioned recesses a Wider flange projecting outwardly from its upper edge, a recess formed in its inner surface and extending throughout the length thereof and provided with teeth extending longitudinally thereof throughout its length, and a plurality of recesses of unequal dimensions formed in said inner surface in vertical relation to said first mentioned recess and extending throughout the Width of said inner surface, each of said last being smaller at its upper-end than at its lower endgand one of said recesses having teeth formed therein extending throughout its length and projecting toward one end of said jaw, all of the recesses in one jaw being positioned so as to register with the corresponding recesses in the other In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 27th day of December, 1918.
