INVENTOH M465: /1. 1 flZ/ZON WI TNESSES A TTORNEYS MABE-L M. LAUZON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1920.
Application filed May 21, 1919. Serial No. 298,646.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MABEL M. LAUzoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Garment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wearing apparel and its object is to provide a new and improved garment which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to permit the user to readily close the garment without the use of hooks, buttons or similar fastening devices. Another object is to permit of readily opening the dress and, if made of washable material, to allow of conveniently laundrying it.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in theclaims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a front elevation of the garment with the parts in closed position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the right hand side of the upper portion of the garment with the parts in open position' 3 is a similar view of the left hand side of the upper portion of the garment;
Fig. 4C is a sectionalplan view of the garment on the line HofFig. 1;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged face view of a modified form of the fastening device for fastening the ends of the belt together; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 66 of Fig. 5.
The body 10 of the garment is provided with a neck opening 11, sleeves 12 and a skirt 13. The body 10 is provided with overlapping front portions 15 and 16 forming continuations of the walls of the neck opening 11, and the front portion 15 has an extension 17 which is part of the upper front portion of the skirt 13 which latter is preferably plaited, as indicated in the drawings. The free end of the front portion 15 and its skirt extension 17 is connected at the lower end of the right hand side with the skirt 13 to form. a placket 18 to permit convenient donning ofthe garment or removing it whenever it is desired to do so. The front overlapping portion 15 and its extension 17 are provided adjacent the sides with vertical slits 20 and 21 through which are'adapted to pass loops 22 and 23, of which the loop 22 is formed on the free end of the inner portion 16 while the loop 23 is formed near the right hand side of the said portion 16 and the upper portion of the skirt 13, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. A belt, belt sash, cord or similar fastening devlce 25 is attached at 26 to the middle of the back of the garment and is adapted to overlie the seam connecting the body 10 with the skirt 13, and the ends of the belt 25 are adapted to pass through the loops 22 and 23 to fasten the overlapping front portions 15 and 16 in position while in overlapping relation.
One end of the belt 25 is provided with a vertically disposed slit 27 and the other end of the belt 25 is provided with a barbed or spear-shaped head 28 adapted to be engaged with the slit 2? to fasten the ends of the belt together,'as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 1. The head 28 is preferably reinforced by a reinforcing member 29, such as a piece of featherbone, whalebone or other suitable stiffening material extending vertically in the base portion of the head 28 to prevent the latter from accidentally disengaging the vertical slit 27. The slit 27 is somewhat less in length than the base of the spear-shaped head 28 to permit accidental disengagement of the head from the slit. Instead of only one slit 27 and one head 28, use may be made of interlocking heads and slits on both ends of the belt, as illustrated in Fig. 5. It is understood that this fastening device although only shown and described for fastening the ends of the belt together my be used for fastening other parts of wearing apparel together and hence I do not limit myself to the particular application shown and described. It is understood that in order to engage the wider head with the narrow slit 27 it is necessary to place the head into a diagonal position and then push it through the slit 27 thus allowing the reinforcing member 29 to readily pass through the slit. It is further understood that the side portions of the base of the head extend beyond the ends of the slit and hence the head is prevented from accidentally slipping out of the slit.
It will be seen that when the belt 25 is in open position the garment can be readily donned or removed, and when the garment is in position on the wearers body then the loops 22 and 23 can be readily passed through the vertical slits and 21 and the ends of the belt can be passed through the said loops 22 and 23 projecting from the outer face of the front portion 15 to fasten the overlapping portions 15 and 16 together. The head 28 of the belt can next be readily engaged with the slit 27 to interlock the ends of the belt thus holding the latter closed.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the garment can be readily closed without the use of hooks, buttons or similar fastening devices, and it will also be noticed that the garment especially if made of washable material can be readily laundried without requiring removal of any of the parts.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A garment, comprising a body having a neck opening, sleeves and a skirt, the body having overlapping front portions of which the outer one is provided with slits and the inner one is provided with loops extending through the slits, and a fastening device extending through the said loops and having its free ends provided with interlocking means 2. A garment, comprising'a body having a neck opening, sleeves and a skirt, the body having overlapping front portions of which the outer one is provided adjacent the sides with vertical slits and the inner one is provided with loops extending through the said slits, and a fastening member attached exteriorly to the back of the garment and passing through the loops, the ends of the said fastening member overlying the front portion of the body and having interlocking means to close the fastening member.
3. A garment, comprising a body having a neck opening, sleeves and a skirt, the body having overlapping front portions of which the outer one is provided adjacent the sides with vertical slits and the inner one is provided with loops extending through the said slits, and a fastening member attached exteriorly to the back of the garment and passing through the loops, the ends of the fastening member overlying the front portion of the body, one of the ends being provided with a vertical slit and the other end terminating in a barb-like head engaging the slit of the fastening member.
4:. A garment, comprising a body having a neck opening, sleeves and a skirt, the body having overlapping front portions of which the outer one is provided adjacent the sides with vertical slits and the inner one is provided with loops extending through the said slits, and a fastening member attached exteriorly to the back of the garment and passing through the loops, the ends of the fastening member overlying the front por tion of the body, one of the ends being provided with a vertical slit and the other end terminating in a barb-like head engaging the slit of the fastening member, the said head having a vertically disposed reinforcing member, the upper and lower ends of which extend beyond the top and bottom of the slit of the said fastening member.
5. A garment having overlapping front portions, the outer portion being provided with slits and the inner portion with loops extending through the slits, and a flexible band like member passing through the loops and having its ends secured together.
6. A fastening device for fastening two parts of wearing apparel together comprising a spear-shaped head of a flexible material on one part engaging a slit on the other part, and a vertical reinforcing member in the said head at the base thereof, the said slit being less in length than the base of the said head and its reinforcing member.
