Description

R fs,2 MAINS. Lap" -C a'hdelier.
Patented De. 3,1872.
UNITED i STATES PATENT GFFIcE.
vRANDOLPH S. MAINS, OF NEW YORK, N. `Y.
IMPROVEMENT llN LAMP-CHANDELIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,589, dated December 3, 1872.
' invention, the chandelier being shown in vertical section.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspoding parts.
A is the base, which may be made of any suitable material, and in any desired style or shape. The lamp B rests upon this base, as seen in the drawing. C represents suspending-chains, four, more or less, in number. These chains connect with the stationary ring D, from which other chains E connect with the main supporting-chain F. The mode of arranging these chains and suspending the chandelier does not ditl'er necessarily from that of other articles of a similar kind. G is a loose sliding ring which surrounds the suspendingchains VG,v and which, when slipped down as seen in the drawing, contracts the chains so l as to secure the lamp, as seen in the drawing.
When this ring or band is raised the lamp may be removed vand used the same as other lamps. H is the shade, made of any suitable material and in any desired style. The shade is suspended by the chains I, connected with the I main supporting-chain by means of a hook, to
which the chains I are attached. This hook willen gage with any of the links in the main supporting-chains, so that the shade may be adjusted higher or lower, as may be desired.
'ihe chandelier is so suspended that it maybe raised or lowered, as may be required, and may be made and used either with orwithout a shade. With the common kerosene lamp in this chandelier all the advantages of the exf pensive extension gas-chandelier are secured with this additional advantagethe light may bel readily removed and utilized away from the chandelier. The advantages are many, and must be obvious to all.
The-chandelier may be suspended from a cord and made adjustable to any part of the room, as seen in Fig. 2.
When the lamp is changed or removed the shade is disposed of by hanging it on the small arm, J, as represented in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new .and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A chandelier, consisting` of the base A, suspending-chains C, E, and F, sliding ring or band G, and adjustable shade H, as and for the purposes described.
2. The base A, with the above-describedchains, stationary' ring D and sliding ring G, for the purposes described. Y
