CIG-AR-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1920.
Application led. April 14, 1919. Serial No. 289,895.v
To all w/om t may concern n Be it known that I, OsoAn A. Pronn'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dover, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an im-k proved cigar or cigarette holder, and has for its object to produce an article of this character having means associated therewith to both effectively hold a cigar or cigarette in the holder or to permit of the ready ejection of such cigar or cigarette therefrom.
The objects of the improvement may be accomplished by a simple construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts such as is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the holder showing a cigar therein.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. l, illustrating by the dotted lines the manner in which the cigar is ejected from the holder.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view ap-v proximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, the cigar being removed. v
Fig.' 4 is a similar sectional view approxif, mately on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the holder -`with the elastic gripping sleeve removed.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the gripping element. i
7 is a plan view ofthe blank from which the gripping element is formed.
The holder 6 may be of any desired size, shape and construction, the same having its widened end, or the end thereof opposite the mouth piece reduced and preferably concaved as at 7. On the reduced portion are secured equi-distantly disposed plates 8. rihese plates have their outer ends reduced or bent upon themselves to provide outstanding pairs of parallelears 9. The plates are round or of a concavo-convex shape in crossy section so that the same are snugly received upon the reduced portion of the holder, and as stated secured thereto.
Pivoted between each pair of ears 9 is a lever 10, the pivots therefor being indicated I by the numeral 1l. .Each of the levers has its inner end provided with a head portion 12 and its outer end provided with a seg-l mental laterally extending head 13.
` The cigar or cigarette gripping' element is indicated by the numeral 14 and is con structed of some elastic material, such as a sheet of rubber. The ends of the sheet are connected lso that the gripping element is in the nature of a tube. The opposite edges of the sheet 14V are provided with spaced outwardly extending portions l15 which are bent over the body of the sheet 14 and have their ends secured to the said sheet so that the central portion of the said members 15 arey bulged away from the sheet. The inner walls provided by these bulged portions form pockets. One of the series of pockets is designed to receive therein the plates 8, while the outer and oppositely disposed series of pockets are designed to receive there y in the outer ends of the levers 10' It will be apparent lthat incident to the natural elasticity of the tubular member 14 the levers 10 will beswung to normal position. When a cigaror cigarette is to be received in the holder pressure is exerted on the head portions 12 of the levers 10 which causes vthe outer ends thereof to be swung outwardly, stretching the elastic tube 14 and permitting the cigar or cigarette being readily received in the holder. When. the cigarv or cigarette has been consumed, a pressure 1s again exerted upon the heads of the levers 'to again expand the elastic tube 14, permitting the used cigar orcigarette being` removed from the holder. l
It is believed, from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings. the simplicity of the construction and the advantages thereof will be readily apparent without further detailed description.
Having thus ldescribed the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
n a cigar or cigarette holder, a mouthpiece. an elastic band surrounding the outer end thereof, said band having its edges provided with spaced pockets. plates, levers pivotally secured to said plates, one of each of said plates designed to be received in the respective inner pockets of the elastic member and the outer and free ends of the levers designed to be received in the respective outer pockets, as and for the purpose set forth.
ln'testimony whereof I affix my signature.
OSCAR A. POKETT.
