To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN F. CRosBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heels; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in heels and particularly to heels for ladies Shoes and especially to such heels which are formed from metal. In applying these heels to shoes, difficulty is experienced in having them properly located and it is frequently necessary to remove the fastening devices and adjust the heel. The object of this invention is to form a heel which may be readily adjusted in position and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described as particularly recited in the claim. In carrying out my invention I form the heel 5 from cast metal with a chamber 6 in its upper face, which tends to lighten the heel. The front and rear walls are respectively formed with lugs 7 and 8 and these walls are connected by a bridge 9 which is secured to the lugs by screws 10. This bridge is formed with a longitudinal slot 11 and the sides of the bridge are turned downward and inward to form a guide-way for a sliding block 12. The exterior conformation of the heel may be of any approved type but preferably the forward upper edge is extended, forming a lip 13 which extends to the sole 14. The heel is applied to the under face of the sole 14 and over the upper face of the sole 1% I place a plate 15 formed with perforations for screws 16 which extend down through the sole and into the block 12 and after the heel has been properly adjusted these screws 16 are tightened so as to firmly draw the heel against the sole and connect it thereto.
Metal heels are usually provided with top lifts of leather and provision has been made for nailing these top lifts to the heel but instead of nailing the top lifts, I propose to form the heel with two holes, one on each side of the longitudinal center and form the top lift 17 with holes through which screws 18 may pass and by which the top lift is firmly secured to the heel. With my improved construction, the heel can be readily adjusted and firmly held in place and the top lift may be removed and replaced as occasion may require and will always be firmly held in position.
I claim:
The combination with the sole of a shoe of a metallic heel adapted to be applied thereto, said heel formed with a recess in its upper face, a bridge crossing said recess and formed with a longitudinal slot, a block carried by said bridge and longitudinally movable thereon, a plate applied to the inner surface of the sole and screws extending through said plate and sole and into the said block whereby the heel is adjustably secured in place.
