TRAP.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1,.CI-IARLES P. BEISEL,

a citizen of the United $tates, residing at East Cambridge, in thecounty of Middlesex andState of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Trap, of which the following is a specification. w

This invention relates to traps for rats, mice and other rodents, and more particularly to an attachment to be applied to a box, wash boiler-or other container by the purchaser and which, after being so applied, will constitute an eflicient means for trapping the rodents, allowing them to enter the container easily butpreventi ng egress.

Another object is to provide means whereby the rodents can be subjected gradually to opposition in passinginto the container and be allowed to freely leave the container until accustomed to the partial obstructions, after which the attachment can be set so as toprevent the rodents from leaving the container.

A further object is to provide a simple and efficient attachmentwhich can easily be connected to a wooden or a metal container, and the parts of which are so made that they will not readily get out of order.

Another object is to provide means whereby the parts can be held inactive to allow free movement of the rodents into and out of the container.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists ofcertain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth "in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view of a trap with parts broken away, the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

Referring to the drawingby characters of reference 1 designates a sheet metal framecenter of the inner edge thereof and sleeves 5 are formed integral with said edge at opposite sides of the tongue 4:. The outer.cor ne'rs' of the frame are slit to form back wardly extending attaching tongues 6.

Supported by and pivotally connectedto the flanges 2 is a bail 7 adapted, when lowcred, to extend under the lip Loosely mounted in the intermediate portion of this bail are hangers 8. U-shaped guard fingers 9 are pivotally mounted in the sleeves 5 and v have suitably pointed free, ends. These guard lingers are of such length that, when hanging downwardly, they will extend entirely acrossthe opening in the frame 1 and rest againstthe lip 3.

The device hereinbefore described is adapted to be sold to the user who after selecting a suitable container, either of wood or of metal, cuts a hole therein of about the same size as the opening in the frame 1. If the container is of wood, as indicated at C in the drawing, the tongues 6 can be driven back into the wall of the container and the frame 1 can be fastened by tacks driven through openings in the frame 1, as indicated at 10. One or more of these attachments can be combined with a single container C. In the form shown in the drawing two attachments are used. If the container is of metal slits can be cut therein adjacent the opening and the tongues 6 can be inserted into the slits and bent back, thus to attach the frame 1 to the container in a manner that is obvious and does not need specific illustration.

After the device has been attached to a container the bail 7 is swung upwardly into engagement with the catch 4 and will support the guard fingers 9 in raised position as shown at the right of the drawing. The hangers 8 can be slid to .the sides of the frame 1 so as not to obstruct the opening. Bait can then be placed in the container and the rodents will have free access thereto and can pass from the container readily. After the user of the trap concludes that the rodents have become accustomed to entering and leaving the container the hangers 8 are slid to position across the opening in the frame 1 and bait is placed in the container, The rodents will in time find that they can pass the hangers by pushing them inwardly or outwardly and will soon become accustomed thereto. The container is again baited and the bail 7 lowered. This allows the guard fingers 9 to move downwardly and the 1 against the guard fingers and pass into the container where they will be trapped by said What is claimed is 1. A trap attachment for containers including a frame, guard fingers carried thereby and adapted to swing downwardly across the frame, means for supporting the fingers in raised position, and adjustable hangers suspended from said means;

A trap attachment for containers including a frame, guard fingers connected thereto and adapted to swing downwardly across the opening in the frame, a supporting bail for holding the fingers raised from the opening in the frame, means for holding the bail in holding position, and hangers adjustably mounted on thebail.

3. A trap including a frame, backwardly extending side flanges thereon, a lip extending backwardly from the bottom portion of the frame, guard fingers hung from the top 95 portion of the frame, and means suspended from the side flanges for supporting the fingers in elevated position.
