PUMP P'ISTON.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 14. 1919.

A TTOH/VEI/S BENJAMIN FRANKLIN Moss, or B IsBEE, ARIZONA.
PUMP-PISTN.
Specification of- Letters Patent.
ratentemiuane, 1920.
Application med August 14, 1919. serial Noi 317,508.
To all whom z't may concern.' Be it known that I, BENJAMIN 1| l\ 1oss, acitizen of the United States,'res1d1ng at Bisbee, inthe county of Cochise andState of Arizona, have-invented new and useful Improvements in `Pump-Pistons, of which the following is aspecication.
- This \inventionrelates to pumps,I particularly tot those of the reciprocatory type, and has for its object the provision of a novelly constructed pump piston including a leather cup washer within which is disposed a split spring ring which bears resiliently outwardly against the washer and causes the washer to engage'thev periphery of the pump 4barrel closely so as to form a leak-proof contact whereb the pumpthus equipped will be highly e cient and whereby the wear onthe cup washerwill be automatically taken up. i
An important object is the provision o a pump in which the barrel is provided adacent its upper end with apair ofair inlet openings which admit air into the barrel after the piston has passed by the openings on its upstroke.
An additional object is the provision of p a pump which will be simple and 'inexpensive -in manufacture and assembly, highly efcient in use, durable. in service, and a generalimpro'vement in the art.
With the above and other objects and' advantages in View, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illus- .trated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation ofa pump 'afwith openings for the purpose of admitting i air.` The base member 10 has formed therein an outlet passage 15 which is threaded,
jas shown at 16, for engagement therein of the nipple on any suitable conducting hose.
'I he piston comprises a concave washer 17 which'is engaged upon a reduced portion 18V formed on the lower end of the piston rod 13. Disposed on thereduced portion 18 and engaging against the washer 17 is a leather cup washer 19 within which is dis- ;posed'a flatwasher 20 which is engaged by a spaclng sleeve 21 surrounding the reduced extension 418.` The spacing sleeve 21 is of such length that it will project beyond the open end 0f the washer 19 and disposed against this projecting end is a Hat retaining washer 22 of slightly less diameter than the linternal diameter of the barrel 11. The nut 2,3 is threaded upon the extremity of the extension 18 and engages the washer 22 for holding the various parts of the piston p assembled.
In order that the cup washer 19 may always be urged into close engagement with the..barrel, I provide a split spring ring 24 which is disposed within the cup washer and which engages against the thereof, as clearly shown.
In the operation ofthe pump it will be seen that on the upstroke of the pliston a partial vacuum will be formed in the lower end of the 4barrel until the piston passes the opening 141-, whereupon air-will be drawn into the p side flange barrel through the, openings 14.v On the down stroke the air will be compressed and will be forced lout in advance of the piston through the outlet passage 15. At all times it will be seen thatfby virtue of the spring ring '24 the cup' will be urged firmly into err gagement with the internal periphery of the barrel soy as to form close contact therewith, which will prevent leakage of air past vthe piston and which will therefore render the pump highly efficient. While air is spoken of in the operation, it will of course be apparent that liquids ofh also be pumped.
While `I have 'shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is .of courseto befunderstood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement ofparts as will not depart from thespirit of the invention or the scope of thefsubjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I
1. A pump comprising a barrel rovided at one end with agb-ase having a discharge passage therethrough and at its other 'end with .a cap having a hole therein, said barrel any description may being further provided adjacent said cap With air inlet openings, a piston rod disposed Within the barrel and slidable through the hole in said cap, a reduced extension on the end of said rod, and a piston on said extension including a concave Washer, a leather cup Washer engaging against said-concave Washer and having a flange engaging' against the/inner periphery of the barrel, a .Hat Washer disposed Within and bearing against the circular portion of said cup Washer, a spacing sleeve surrounding said extension and engaging said flat Washer and projecting beyond theopen end of said cup Washer, a retaining Washer engaging against the projecting end of said sleeve, a nut threaded upon nsaid extensionand engaging said retaining Washer, and a split spring ring disposed Within said' cup Washer and engagingl against the inner periphery of the flange thereof. i
2. In a pumpincluding a barrel and a reciprocatory piston rod, a .reduced extension on said lrod defining la shoulder, a concave Washer disposed upon said extension and engaging said shoulder, a leather cup Washer disposed agai st said concave Washer and having its flav ge extending in the opposite direction to the concavity of said concave Washer,y a flat Washer disposed Within and hearing against the circular portion of said leather cup Washer, a spacing sleeve encircling said extension and engaging said iiat Washer, a retaining Washer engaging the outer end' of said spacing sleeve, clamping ineens on said extension engaging said retainingvvasher, and a split spring ring disposed Within said cup Washer and bearing U against the inner periphery of 'the flange thereof.A
