Specification of Letters Patent.

2f() all whom t may conce/lut.'
` Be it known that I, EDWARD N. vloon, a citizen n of the United States, residing` at (Qakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Interior-` blotting Attachments for Lathes, of Which f the following is a specification.
My invention relatesV generally to lathe attachments and particularly to an appliance or device adapted for ready attach-V ment toand removal from the cross-slide of a lathe, and the function of which is to cut or plane an interior key-Way, groove or,
slot in the shaft-hole of a part, such, for example, as a gear, Wlnch'has kbeen previously turned and milled in the chuck of the lathe, the slotting'being done while said part or gear is still in the chuck, Without removing or disturbing it.
The object of my invention is to provide a ksimple and effective appliance for lthis purpose, and to this end my invention consists in the ynovel interior slotting lathe-attachment which I shall hereinafter fully de-y scribe by reference t0'` the accompanying drawings, 1n Which i Y Figure l 1s la plan View of a lathe, 111 part, showing my attachment applied thereto. y Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of my attachment, enlarged, VWith respect to the showing in Figs. l and 2, the lever arm being omitted. Fig. l is a side view of the same. Fig. 5 is a front end View of same.
I have not deemed it necessary to illustrate the lathe in full detail, it being suf- Y' ficient to indicate-its bed 1, its head stock 2, head-stock spindle 2', speed-change pulleys 3, lead-gears 3, lead-screw Ll, apron or The stock 10 is removably fitted and secured to the cross slide by the headed-bolt 11 and nut 12. The stock 10 is vertically longitudinally channeled at 13, as seen best in Fig.
5, and to one Wall of this channelis iitted and secured by screws 14, a. fixed rack 15.
Tok the opposite Wall of the channel isk fitted the longitudinally reciprocative cutter bar 16, to the innert-ace of Which is secured by screws l'", the rack Y18 which is thus a part of the bar. In one end of the bar 16 is fitted in anyy approved manner the mandrel 19 carryingl the cutter or planer bit :20.
- Y A cover plate 21 secured lay-screws 22 on top of the stock itl. This cover plate has ak longitudinal slot/23 overlying the channel 13 of the stock, and'said slot at one end has a .circular enla] gement 24.
pinion is adapted to be inserted and removed through theenlargement. 2l, and said pinionengages both racks 15 and 18. The pinion has a square stud 26 which plays in theslot 23 of the cover plate and rises therethrough. Upon this stud is litted the operating lever arm 27, by which 'the pinion is rotated about its traveling axis as it moves forward or back in the fixed rack 15 and thereby reeiprocates the cutter bar 16 through its rack 18.
The Voperation' of the device is as follows:-
After Vthe gearv 8 has been turned Vand milled in the lathe and While it is still in the chuck, I remove the ordinary tool-post.
from the cross-slide of the lathe and substitute'the stock 10. Then byL means of the ilathe carriage 5 I move the device up to the Work, and by means of the cross-slide 6, set 1t over so that the cutter or planer-bit 20 is 1n position to make thecrst cut `of the slot 9 in the Wall of the shaft hole 9 of the gear 8. Then by operating the lever arm 27, the cutter bar 16 is forced forward toeffect the first cut, and is Withdrawn by the opposite movement of the lever-arm. Succeeding cuts are similarly made, as the toolY is fed sidewise by the cross-slide 6. As my invention lies essentially in the attachment tothe cross slide of a lathe, of a stock, carrying a reciprocative cutter-carrying bar, adapted to plane out an interior slot by linear movement, 1t iscobviousl that various mechanical transmissions may be appliedby which the reciprocation of the cut- Y ter bar may be effected. I do not therefore 'confine' myself to the means here shown,
except as l hereinafter specifically claimed, but I may state that the transmission above relatively sniall diaineter tor relatively large movement of the cutter bar.
The enlargement 2d in the slot 23 of the cover-plate 22, not only permits the insertion and removal ot the pinion, but also provides toi the initial engagement of the pinion with the rack 18 ot the cutter bar at such point as inay be required by the desii-ed amount ot projection of said bar.
l. An interior slotting attaohinent tor lathes, comprising a n longitudinally channeled stock provided with means for detachably fitting' it on the cross-slide of the lathe; a slotted cover-plate iitted to the stock and overlying its channel; a reeiprocative cutterbai mounted in the covered channel ot said stock and adapted to carry a slottinp; tool; a rack cariiedby the cutter bar; a pinion housed Within the covered channel' ot the stoel; tor reciprocating the cutter-bar; and nieans operating' through the slotted cover plate for rotating the pinion.
2. in interior slotting attachment for lathes, comprising` a longitudinally lchanneled stock provided with means for detaehably fitting it on the cross-slide ot the iathe; a slotted cover-plate fitted to the stool and overlying itsV Channel; a reciproeative 'cutter-bar linounted in one side of the other side oi the covered steek-channel; a iaol on the opposing` 'face ot the cutter bar; a travoliiw pinion housed Within the and *F\ coi/'ered Channel engaging both racl's; ineans operating' through the slotted Cover plate tor rotating said pinion. p
3. in interior slotting attachment tor lathes, Comprising` a longitudinally channeled stock provided with iiieans for detae-liahly fittingy it on the Cross-slide of the lathe; a ieeipioeative.cutter-har mounted in one side of the vchannel ot the stock and adapted to eaiiy a slottinn' tool; a rack iXed in the other side ot the stock-channel; a rack on the opposite iaeeY ot the cutter bar; a traveling; pinion Within the steelt-channel engaging; both racks; a Cover plate fitted to the top ot the stock and overlying` its channel to house in the racks and pinion, said platehaving a longitudinal slot With an enlargement to adniit the pinion; and a lever arin .fitted to the pinion through the coverplate slot, :tor rotating" said pinion.
In testimony ivhei'eot have signed iny naine to this speoiioation in the presence of tivo subsei'ibinp,- Witnesses.
