OIL-FILTERING ATTACHMENT FOR FURNACES.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ML'arQEE, 1929,.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that-T, MAX BLUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Lnprovei'nents in Oil-Filtering Attachments for Furnaces, of which .the following 1s a specification.
My invention relates to oil burning furnaces, and the principal object of the in vention is to provide means associated with the oil supply pipe of a furnace of this type for filtering-and at the same time heating the oil before it reaches the burner. The heating of the oil increases its fluidity and makes possible a more etlicient filtering thereof, since finer mesh screens may be employed than when the oil is cold. The increased fluidity facilitates vaporization at the bin-nor, and tends to insure complete combustion.
The invention consists of the novel and improved constructions, arrangements and devices to be hereinafter described and claimed, for carrying out the above stated objects as will appear from the following description. p
The inventionis illustrated in certain. preferred embodiments in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 shows a side elevational view of a device embodying my invention connected to a furnace;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the heating device and furnace, shown in F ig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of the heating device and furnace shown inl ig. 1, and showing the heating device connected to the burner of the furnace; and
Fig. l is a sectional view of the heating and filtering device, taken on the line lt of Fig. 2.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The heating and filtering device comprises a casing 10 which is connected to a source of oil supply (not shown) by means of a pipe 11, provided with a valve 12 to cut off the supply of oil when desired. lit is also connected to the burner 13 under the combustion chamber 14- of the furnace 15 by means of a pipe 16, provided with the valve 17 to control the flow of fuel therethrough. The burner 13, combustion chamber 14: and furnace 15 form no part of my invention,
and will not, therefore, be described in detail.
The casing 10 of the filtering and heating eter than the bore 19 and somewhat larger in diameter than the bore 18, thus, as will be clearly seen froni Fig. 4, providing the annular shoulders 21 and 22. The lower end of the heating and filtering device is internally screw-threaded and is closed by means of a'screw plug 23 which is preferably dish shaped and adapted to receive any sediment deposited therein from the oil. The heating device may be provided with a plurality of wire screens to strainthe: oil, preferably the screen of fine mesh and the screen 25 of coarser mesh. The screen 2-l is approximately the same diameter as the central bore 20 and fits snugly against the annular shoulder 21. The screen 25 is approximately the same diameter as the lower bore or chamber 19 and fits snugly against the annular shoulder 22. The screens 24 and 25 are held against the respective shoulders 21 and 22 by means of the rod 26 which is threaded through the cap or plug 23. The rod 26 passes through the center of the screens 24 and 25 and is provided with a plurality of nuts 27. Preferably the nuts are adjustedon the rod 26 so that the screens will be flexed slightly against the shoulders 21 and 22 to insure aclose fit. The inlet pipe 11 is threaded into the lower chamber 19 and the outlet-pipe 16 is threaded into the upper chamber 18. The upper chamber 18 may be provided with an outlet 28 in addition to the one for the pipe 16, thereby making it possible to connect the filtering device so as to supply fuel or gas to two burners, or so that it can be used on either side of the furnace. The outlet 28 not in use is closed by means of a threaded plug 29. The lower chamber 19 is provided with a blow-0d cook 30 so that any water or vapor that may accumulate in the lower chamber 19 may be drawn ofi as often as required.
Heat is preferably supplied to the casing 10 by means of an overhanging hot air pipe 31 which has communication with the worktil top of the filtering device. The volume of hot air may be regulated by means of the gate or valve 32 in the pipe 31.
The operation of the device 1s very simple. The fuel oil is fed to the filtering and heating device 10 under pressure. The gate 32 is opened and a. steady flow of hot air plays on the heating and filtering device 10, which thoroughly heats the walls of the entire de vice. The heat is transmitted to the incoming stream of oil in the chamber 19 which acts rapidly to thin the oil so it will readily pass through the screens 25 and 24, even if they are of very fine mesh. All foreign matter carried in the oil is freely given up and collects in the dish-shaped plug 23. Whatever water there is in the oil will be readily separated and will collect in the chamber 19 and niay be drawn oil by means of the cook 30. The heating of the oil as described facilitates its vaporization at the burner.
While I have described my invention in a certain preferred embodiment, it will be understood that modifications might be made without departure from the principles of the invention. Therefore I do not wish to be understood as limiting the invention to the precise arrangements, constructions and devices shown and described, except so far as certain of the claims herein are specifically so limited.
