L;ATENT CFFICE.
HARRISON MCMULLIN, OF BATESVILLE, ARKANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,165, dated November 19, 187:2.
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, HAaRIsoN MGMULLIN, of Batesville, in the county of Independence and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fence, of' which the following is a specilication:
The figure is a perspective view of a portion of my improved fence.
My invention has for its object to furnish au improved fence, simple in construction, inexpensive, and substantial 5 and it consists in the fence constructed as hereinafter more fully described.
A are the lower planks or rails, the lower edge or side of which is laid upon the ground or upon low blocks of stone or w'ood. The planks or rails A are placed end to end, and upon the opposite sides of said adjacent ends are placed blocks B of stone or wood. The blocks B, when made of wood, are designed to be nailed or spiked to the ends of the said planks or railsA. C areblocks of stone or wood, which are laid upon the tops of the blocks B and the ends of the planks A, and which, when made of wood, should be nailed or spiked to the said blocks B and planks or rails A. D are planks or rails, which are placed end to endupon the blocks O. E are blocks of stone or wood, which are laid upon the blocks C upon the opposite sides of the adjacent ends of the planks or rails D, and which, when made of wood, are designed to be nailed or spiked to said planks or rails D and to the blocks C. F are blocks of wood or stone, laid upon the blocks E and adjacent ends of the rails D, and which, when made of Wood, should be nailed or spiked to the blocks E and planks D. G are planks or wide rails, which are laid end to end upon the blocks F, and which are designed to serve as caps to protect the lower parts of the fence from the weather. H are blocks of stone or wood, placed upon the blocks F upon each side of the adjacent ends of the planks or rails G, and which, when made of wood, should be nailed or spiked to the planks or rails G and blocks F. Upon the ends of the planks or rails G and blocks H are laid blocks I, of stone or wood, which, When of wood, should be nailed or spiked to the said planks or rails G and blocks H. J is the top rail or scantling that rests upon the blocks I and supports the stakes K, which are driven into the ground upon the opposite sides of the fence and cross each other above the rail J. L is the rider, which rests upon the crossed stakes K, as shown in the figure.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentrlhe arrangement of the blocks B C E F H I, whether stone or wood, with the ends of the planks or rails A D Gr J that form the panels, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
HARRISON MGMULLIN.
