To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HARDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to internal combustion engines, and has for an object to provide a device for connection to the intake of the engine to introduce heated air thereinto so as to thoroughly vaporize the fuel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device embodying an electric heating element for attachment to the air intake of a carbureter or the like of an internal combustion engine whereby to introduce heated air into the carbureter to thoroughly vaporize the liquid fuel to insure the starting of the engine at low temperatures.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device including a casing, open at each end for connection at one end to the carbureter, or intake of an internal combustion engine, and containing an electric heating element to be energized when the engine is to be started in cold weather so as to supply heated air to the intake to thoroughly vaporize the liquid fuel and thereby secure a rich mixture.
In addition to the foregoing my invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of the correlative parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly set forth in the appended claims. I

lVith reference to the drawings, 10 indicates a cylindrical casing composed of semicircular halves 11 and 12 which are held together by means of a band 13, split longitudinally as at 141 and provided with cars at opposite sides of said split portion as indicated at 15. The ears are apertured to receive bolts 16 whereby the band is clamped upon the halves of the casing to secure them together in proper relation. The band 13 is of a length corresponding to the length of the casing. 1
A circular plate 17 is applied to one end of the casing having one face recessed as at 18 to receive the casing and to inclose the band 13 at said end of the device. The plate 17 is provided with a central opening 19, and with integrally apertured ears 20 at diametrically opposite points. Applied to the other end of the device is a similar circular plate 21 recessed as at 22 to receive that end of the device and to inclose the band, the plate 21 however, being formed with a central tubular extension 22 which terminates in a circular flange 23. The plate 21 is also provided with apertured cars 24: for alinement with the ear 20 whereby threaded rod 25 may be extended through the ears 20 and 24 at each side of the device to bind the plates together.
The casing 10 is formed internally with a spiral groove 26 which is semi-circular in cross section to receive a helical electric heating element 27, the terminals of which are seated in recesses 28 which are located at the terminals of the spiral groove 26. The recesses 28 are formed by providing recesses in the meeting faces of the halves 11 and 12 of the casing, and secured in said recesses are the heads 29 of binding posts 30 which also extend through openings formed in enlargements 31 of the halves l1 and 12 of the casing adjacent the recesses 28. The binding posts 30 are suitably insulated from the casing which may be constructed entirely of metal, and terminals of the electric heating element are electrically connected to said binding post.
In use, the flange 23 at one end of the device is bolted to the air intake of the carbureter of an internal combustion engine or at any other point where fuel is introduced, and when the engine is to be started in cold weather current 1s passed through the electric heating element 27 whereby the coils thereof become heated. During the suction strokes of the engine when starting the same, air is drawn through the opening 19, at one end of the device, through the convolutions of the heating element, and after passing through the tubular extension 22 enters the carburetor or intake thereby vaporizing the fuel with the result that a rich mixture is introduced into the cylinders bustion engines of the stationary type, or
for aeroplane engines and it may be used advantageously in any internal combustion engine employing either liquid or gaseous fuel as a motive power. The device is of particular utility in connection with aeroplanes which travel at high altitudes Where the temperature of the air is low at all times.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made, and I therefore desire to reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlative parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A device of the character described including a cylindrical casing formed. of longitudinal semi-cylindrical halves, means for securing the halves together, said casing having an internal spiral groove, apertured plates, one applied to each end of the casing, means for holding the plates together, and a binding post at each end of the casing for connection to the terminals of the spiral heating element.
2. A device of the character described including a cylindrical casing formed of semicylindrical'halves, a split band for binding the halves together, a pair of plates, each having one face recessed to receive the ends of the casing and the band, bolts for binding the plates together, each plate having an opening formed therein, a tubular eX- tension on one plate for connection to the intake. of an internal combustion engine, said casing having a recess at each end, and a spiral groove formed internally, and an electric spiral heating element seated within the grooves, and binding posts in the terminal recesses for connection to the terminals of the heating elements.
