DAVID E. WEAVER, OF OHEVIOT, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN HATCHETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,996, dated November 12, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID E. WEAVER, of Cheviot, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hatchets for Removing Hoops from Barrels, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of Invention.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of the common hatchet, which will adapt it for the removal of the top hoop of a flour barrel, so that the barrel head can be taken out; and consists in combining with the common hatchet of a hook or claw between the head and handle which will serve to grasp the top hoop of a barrel, and, by the aid of the handle as a lever and the head of the hatchet as a fulcrum, remove it forcibly from the barrel, without destroying the hoop or injuring the barrel.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
The accompanying drawing represents, in perspective, my improved tool in the act of removing the top hoop of a barrel.
General Description.
A is the hatchet, formed with the ordinary cutting-edge a, head a, and the eye e, for the handle B. In addition to this I form upon the hatchet the hook or claw U, of such a length, and curved in such a way that when the head of the'hatchet rests upon the top of the staves of the barrel, or upon the top head of the barrel, the claw will engage with the under side of the hoop. By this provision of the claw the handle is made to operate as a lever and the head of the hatchet as a fulcrum, when, by the application of power to the handle, the top hoop of the barrel can be readily removed without destroying it; and, when so removed, the head of the barrel can be taken out in the ordinary way, the head of the hatchet serving Claim.
A hatchet provided with claw O, in the manner as herein shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony of which-invention I hereunto set my hand.
D. E. WEAVER.
