To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, llofin E Hpnrnnno, a citizen of the United States, residing-"at Warren, in the county'of VVar'ren and State of-Pennsyl'va'nia, have in-ventedcertam new and useful Improvements in V ses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nvention, such, as will enablejothersskilled 1n the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a vise whose aws may -be quickly and easily ad usted for work of different sizes, without the necessity of excessively turning a screw or the like; and a further object is to provide a novel means for swiveling the device upon a work bench or the like.
With the foregoing in View, the invent on resides in the novel features of construct on and the unique association of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this appllcation.

In the drawings above briefly descr bed, the numeral 1 designates 9, preferably c1rc ular cast metal base having integral with 1ts upper side a vise body or block 2, the upper side of this block being provided with an elongated dove-tail rib 3 upon which a movable jaw 4: slides toward and away from a fixed jaw 5 which is integral with the block 2 and rises therefrom, being located at one end of the block while at the other end thereof, a detachable lug 7 extends upwardly, said lug being shown as provided with an opening 8 extending in a direction parallel with the rib 3 and preferably embodied in the form of a notch as shown.

The "movementof the rack bar 9 is preferably restricted by means of the longitudinal slot 15 and the pin 16 received therein, said pin passing through the lug 7 as shown. Also, in order to return the rack to initial position and at the same time to withdraw the movable jaw 1 from the work when the nut 13 is loosened, a spring 17 is preferably provided, one end of said spring being received in a socket l8 in the lug 7 while its other end bears against an arm 19 which depends from the rear end of the rack bar 9, said arm being by prefer ence provided with a stud 20 received in said spring to retain it in place.
The teeth 21 of the rack bar 9 are preferably of the ratchet type seen most clearly in Fig. 3, and by means of these teeth and a pivoted dog 22, the movable jaw 4 may be connected with the rack bar for movement bodily therewith, the dog 22 being pivoted at 23 in a recess 24 formed in said movable jaw. It will be seen that by this arrangement, the dog 22 may be raised out of engage-.
ment with the teeth 21, whereupon the movable j aw 4 may he slid easily along the rib 3 or other guideway used, so as to bring it up against the work WV. After this initial ad justment, the handle 14 is operated to actuate the nut 13, so that the screw 12 and rack bar 9 come into play to force said movable jaw tightly against the work, through the instrumentality of the dog 22. The moment the nut 13 is loosened, the spring 17 retracts all parts so that the work is released.
In mounting the device upon a Work bench Or the like, a swivel connection is preferably used, and to this end the circular base 1 rests upon a flat circular attaching plate 25 which is secured by screws or the like 26 to the bench or to any other suitable support, the upper edge of said plate 25 having a projecting continuous rib 27 on its periphery, while the base 1 is provided with an annular depending flange 28 which surrounds said rib 27 and is spaced outwardly therefrom as clearly shown in. Figs. 4 and 5. A pair of bolts 29 pass through openings 30 in the base 1 and have their heads 31 located between and in contact with the flange 28 and the peripheral edge of the plate 25, under the rib 27, and wing nuts or the like 32 are threaded on the upper ends of the bolts. It will be seen that the bolts not only provide a simple clamping means for securing the swiveled base in adjusted position, but their heads and bodies serve to center the base uponthe plate 25. By removing the nuts 32, the entire base may be removed from the plate 25 and the bolts are then free from the latter. If desired, the previously used bolts or others may be passed directly through the openings 30 to secure the device to a work bench or the like when the plate 25 is not en1- ployed.
I claim:
In a-vise mounting, a. circular attaching plate adapted to be secured to a support and having at the upper portion of its peripheral edge a continuous circumferential rib, a vise base resting on said plate and having a depending annular flange surrounding and spaced outwardly from said rib, said base having openings between the rib and flange, bolts passing through said openings with their heads located between and in contact with the peripheral edge of said attaching plate and said depending annular flange, said bolt heads being positioned under said rib, and nuts threaded on the upper ends of said bolts for clamping said base to said attaching plate when required.
