The present application is a division of my pending application. Serial 707.471. filed July 3. 1912. In that ap plica tion there is set forth a method of preparing glass bulbs or similar frangible vessels for use in automatic sprinklers of that type which embodies in its construction a frangible vessel having expansible contents. .and
which is .caused to be opened by the expansive or explosive force of the contents of such trangible vessel induced by the action. of heat.
The method described in said application involves tillingthe bulb full of a liquid at a desired high .teumerature. their cooling the bulb and its contents to normal-temperature. then introducing gasfinto the liquid until the solution substantially fills the bulb. then withdrawing a quantity of the solution until the level of the solution is brought down to the level of the liquid before the gas was introduccd. and thensealing thebulb? The frangible vessel comprises a bulb l of glass or similar material provided with an elongated neck It is to be understood that this bulb is filled with a gas solution up to the dotted line i5-3 and is ready to be sealed.
The method of sealing thewbulb consists in placing the bulb. with the gas solution therein. in a receptacle 4 containing some conducting or heat-absorbing liquid 5, such tor example as water or mercury, as shown in Fig. 1. and then applying heat to't'use or close the end ot' the neck and thus hermetically seal the bulb. as shown in Fig. '2. Preterably the receptacle-'5 is provided with suitably shaped holding devices 6 to receive and hold the bulb. shown in Fig. 1.
By thus placing the bulb and its contents in a receptacle containing a conducting or heat-absprbing liquid. the heat applied will be taken up by the surrounding liquid inthe receptacle fast enough to prevent the escape of any material quantity of the gas from the bulb during the process of scaling.
'hat I claim as my. invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The method of sealing glass bulbs containing a gas in solution which consists in placing the bulb in a receptacle. containing a conducting material and then fusing said bulb.
2. The method of sealing a glass bulb provided with an elongated neck and containing a gas in solution up to a certain point in said neck which consists in placing the bulb in a receptacle containing a conducting material and then fusing the end of said neck.
