HEADLIGHT-DIMMER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS CONNELL and CARL T. STACH, citizens of the United States, and residents of Iowa City, in the county of Johnson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Headlight-Dimmers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to dimmers for automobile and other headlights, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and highly efiicient device adapted to restrict the light to a small area and to prevent the usual glare caused by the headlight reflector, the device being capable of read manipulation to effect a greater diffusion of light by the reflector.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the center line of a headlight. Fig. 2 is a front elevation showing the dimmer opener. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View showing the dimmer closed. Fig. l is a detail showing the dimmer in open position.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a headlight of conventional type having a redoctor 2 and a lamp socket 3. We have shown the latter of elongated form with a portion thereof projecting out beyond the face of the reflector. Securely fastened on this extended portion of the socket, by s: -rews or other means, is a collar 4 which forms a support for a dimmer shield 5. This shield is shown as comprising two semiglobular members 6 adapted to close over the lamp bulb 7, each member having its meeting edge recessed as at 8 to permit projection of the light rays. The two members are hingedly connected as at 9 to the collar 4, and are designed to have a horizontal opening movement.
The shield members are normally maintained in closed position, the means for Specification of Letters Patent.

effecting this including links 10 pivotally secured to each other at one end and at their opposite ends to the shell members, and a rod 12 connected to such links at their meeting point and extending inwardly through the reflector and easing of the headlight, such rod having a washer or other abutment 13 rigidly secured thereto to form a seat for one end of a coiled spring 1 1 fitting in a housing 15, the outer end of which latter is closed by an adjusting nut 16 which forms a bearing for the opposite end of the spring and by which the spring may be tensioned. The outer end of the rod 12 extends beyond the housing 15 and is provided with an eye 17 to accommodate a cord or other element for convenient operation of the rod to effect a turning of the shield members on their pivots whereby a greater radiation of light may be had.
We claim as our invention 1. In a headlight, in combination with the lamp and its socket, a pair of shields having a hinged connection with said socket and adapted to close over the light, and formed to emit a ray of light when in closed position, and means for operating said shields comprising links connected thereto and to each other and a spring actuated rod common to said links.
2. In a headlight, in combination with the lamp and its socket, a pair of shields having a hinged connection with said socket and adapted to close over the light and formed with a light emitting recess, toggle links connecting said shields, a rod connected with said links for moving them on their pivots, and spring mechanism for normally maintaining said shields in closed position.
