Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 30, 1917. Serial No. 189,621.
To all lwhom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. BAL- sTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of IVilmington, New Castle county, Delaware, have invented certain Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is Va specification.
My invention relates to steam boilers, and it consists'of an improved form of tubular boiler and an improved form of boiler shell whereby I am enabled to provide a multiplicity lof heating surfaces within a compact space. In my improved structure, the walls or heating surfaces of the shells are connected by a multiplicity of fire tubes, running in various directions and providing a greatly increased amount of heating surface for the volume of Water and steam contained within the boiler shell.
My improved boiler construction may involve the use of a plurality of wall sections or plates, each of the same size, shape and arrangement; two or more of which may be assembled to provide the desired heating unit for the purpose desired or required.
These and other features of my invention are more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a planvview, partly in section, of my improved boiler construction.
Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same.

Fig. 4, is a sectional View on the line IV-JV, Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5, is a perspective view, partly broken away, of one of the sections comprising my improved boiler construction.
In constructing my improved boiler, thev sections may be made up of two plates of the pan type, which may be specially shaped by a die press or other suitable means, and then joined on a median line, such as indicated at a, and secured together by welding or other suitable means.
In the drawings, 1 represents one of my improved boiler sections, and as the several sections are of the same construction and arrangement, description of one will sutlice forV all.
The sections are made up of the plates 2 and 2a, which may be joined together on the' line by welding the joint; using the oxyacetylene flame or an electrical current,
or by securing the same together in any forming projecting ribs 3 and groovedpor-y tions 4, While the top andv bottom portions -of these plates, including the meeting. joint of the same, are similarly shaped as indicated at 5 and 6, but with the diiference that the projecting portions 3 of the side walls are disposed opposite the recesses or grooves 6 between the projecting portions 5 of the top and bottom walls, andvice versa. At the ends of the respective sections, the side walls of the plates are turned to form the curved walls 7, while substantially centrally of the sections the enlarged, non-corrugatedportions shown in the drawings may be employed. Instead of forming half sections of the pan type, the side walls may be independently formed and joined in any desirable manner to independently formed top and bottom walls.
The side walls are spaced apart and connected together by sets of diagonally disposed open-ended lire tubes 8 and 9, extending in two directions, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, so that the heat or other products of combustion may freely pass through the tubes to effect heating` of Vthe water within the boiler shell. In addition to these diagonally disposed tubes, vertically arranged tubes 10 extend between the recessed portions of the top and` bottom walls, and at the end andv central portions thereof, and such disposition brings said vertically arranged tubes 10 alternately with respect to the diagonally disposed: tubes 8 and 9. In addition, the side walls of theboiler sections may be provided with plain end portions 11 adjoining the curved walls 7 and with a central portion? 12 with straight side walls, and said portions 11 and 12 of the sidewalls are alsoconnected together by tubes 13 substantially horizontally disposed. Certain of these. tubes 13, all
of which are in line, may carry .bolts 15, which serve to secure together aseries of the boiler sections, and Van outer shell 16 may be Patented Jan; 6, 1920.'
provided to inclose a series of boiler sections Y may engage.
Water may be 'introduced into the respective sections by means of a manifold 18- disposed adjacent the botto-rnV of the shells or A'sections having an outlet or outlets 19 leading thereto, 'while the steamwmay be taken off from the top of the boiler sections with which nuts 17 carried by these bolts 15 through the pi-pes 20 and, if desired, a superheating manifold 21 may be placed above the sections with which said pipes communicate. The water supply is preferably disposed in the flue taking off the products of combustion in order that it may be heated before introduction to the several boiler sections.
I claim:
l. In a steam boiler, sections made up of -corrugated side Walls and corrugated top and bottom walls; the corrugations in the side walls being offset with respect to the corrugations in the top and bottom walls and disposed in planes parallel thereto.
2. In a steam boiler, sections made up of corrugated side walls and corrugated top and bottom walls; saidv side walls having rounded ends and enlarged central portions, and the corrugations in the side walls being oset with respect to the corrugations in the top and bottom walls and disposed in Y planes parallel thereto.
3. In a steam boiler, a section made up of a pair of similar halves joined on a median line and made up of corrugated side walls and corrugated top and bottom Walls; the corrugations in the side walls being oset with respect to the corrugations in the top and bottomwalls and disposed in planes parallel thereto.
4. In a steam boiler, a section made up of a pair of similar halves joined on a median line and made up of corrugated side Walls and corrugated top and bottom walls; said side walls having rounded ends and enlarged central portions, and the corrugations in the side walls being offset with respect to the corrugations in the top and bottom walls and disposed in planes parallel thereto.
5. In a steam boiler, sections comprising side walls, and top and bottom walls; the side walls being corrugated and the top and bottom walls being corrugated, and the ribs of the side wall corrugations being disposed opposite the grooves of the'corrugations of the top and bottom walls; all of said corrugations lying in parallel planes.
6. In a steam boiler, a section made up of a pair of plates dished to form side walls and top and bottom walls; said plates being joined together on a median line; the side Walls being corrugated and the top and bottom walls being corrugated; the ribs of the side wall corrugations being disposed in line with the grooves of the corrugations of the to andbottom walls.
El. In a sectional steam boiler, a hollow section comprising a plurality of side walls and top and bottom walls suitably joined tov gether; the side walls being corrugated and the top and bottom walls being corrugated;v
the ribs of the side wall corrugations being disposed oppositethe grooves of thecorruends of said sections being rounded.
8. In a sectional steam boiler, a hollowY section made up of a pair of plates dished to form side walls and top and bottom walls; said plates being joined together on a median line; the side walls being corrugated and the top and bottom walls being corrugated; the ribs of the side wall corrugations being disposed opposite the grooves oi the corrugations of the top and bottom walls, and the'ends of said sections -being rounded to meet on the median line.
9. The combination, in a steam boiler, of a section made up of corrugated side walls with rounded ends and corrugated top and bottom walls; said walls being suitably connected together, and fire tubes connected to and extending diagonally between the side walls.

The combination, in a steam boiler, ot a section made up of corrugated side walls with roundedA ends and corrugated top and bottom walls; said walls being suitably connected together, fire tubes connected to and extending diagonally between the side walls, and re tubes connected to and extending vertically between the top and bottom walls.
l1. The combination, in a steam boiler, of a section made up of corrugated side walls with rounded ends and corrugated top and bottom walls; said walls being suitably connected together, and lire tubes connected to and extending diagonally between the side walls and joined to the latter in the recessed portions of the same.
12. The combination, in a steam boiler, of a section made up of corrugated side walls and corrugated top and bottom walls, lire tubes extending diagonally between the side walls and joined to the latter in the recessed portions of the same, and fire tubes extending vertically between the top and bottom walls and joined to the latter in the recessed portions of the same.
18. The combination, inv a steam boiler, of a section made up of side walls with rounded ends and top and bottom walls, tire tubes connected to land extending diagonally between the side walls, and fire tubes connected to and extending vertically between the top and bottom walls; the vertical fire tubes being disposed between the diagonally arranged ire tubes. .c
14, The combination, in a steam boiler, of a section made up of corrugated side walls and corrugated top and bottom walls, lire tubes extending diagonally between the side walls and joined to the latter in the recessed portion of the same, and vertical tubes connecting the top and bottom walls and joined to the recessed portion of the same; the vertical tubes being disposed between the diagonally arranged tubes.
l5. A steam generator comprisinga plu rality of corrugated sections each having a plurality of diagonally disposed tire tubes with their ends substantially intercommunieating with the ends of adjacent tube sections, and means for securing said sections together.
16. A steam generator comprising a plurality of corrugated sections each having diagonally disposed tubes in the respective sections and vertically disposed tubes, and means Jfor securing said sections together.
17. A steam generator comprising a plurality of corrugated sections each having diagonally disposed tubes, vertically disposed tubes and horizontally disposed tubes in registry, and bolts disposed in certain of said horizontally disposed tubes for securing the sections together.
18. A steam generator comprising a plurality of corrugated sections; the corrugations of which lie in parallel planes, and vertically disposed tubes between the top and Ibottom Walls of said sections and connecting the recessed portions of the corrugations in said walls'.
19. In a steam generator of the sectional type, a hollow unit section having a plurality of walls corrugated throughout their extent and comprising side walls with curved end portions and top and bottom walls; said section being composed of a pair of dished plates connected together on a median line with the corrugations disposed in parallel planes extending throughout the extent of said section, and a plurality of transverse tubes at right angles to the plane of its side Walls carried by said section; the transverse tubes of said section being arranged to register with the transverse tubes of another section and adapted to receive bolts whereby a plurality of sections may be secured together.
20. In a steam generator of the sectional type, a hollow unit section having a plurality of walls corrugated throughout their extent and comprising side walls with curved end portions and top and bottom walls; said section being composed of a pair of dished plates connected together on a median line with the corrugations disposed in parallel planes extending throughout the extent of said section; the external ribs of the corrugations of the side walls being opposite the recesses between the external ribs of the top and bottom walls, a plurality of ire tubes disposed between the walls of the section and connected to said walls, and a plurality of transverse tubes at right angles to the plane of its side walls carried by said section; the transverse tubes of said section being arranged to register with the transverse tubes of another section and adapted to receive bolts whereby a plurality of sections may be secured together.
21. In a steam generator of the sectional type, a hollow unit section having a plurality of walls corrugated throughout their extent and comprising side walls with curved end portions and top and bottom Walls; said section being composed of a pair of dished plates connected together on a median line with the corrugations disposed in parallel planes extending throughout the extent of said section; the external ribs of the corrugations of the side walls being opposite the recesses between the external ribs of the top and bottom walls, lire tubes disposed transversely of the section and connecting the side walls thereof and lying diagonally with respect thereto, vertical re tubes connecting the top and bottom walls; the major portion of which vertical tubes connect the recessed portions of said top and bottom walls between the external ribs thereof, transverse tubes at right angles to the plane of its side walls carried by said section; the transverse tubes of said section being arranged to register with the transverse tubes of another section, and bolts passing through said transverse tubes for securing the respective sections together.
