Speeiicationlof Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30, 1919..
Application led January 27. 1919'. Serial No, 273,374.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK HYDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux Falls, in .the county 0f Minnehaha and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor-Blade- Honing Handles, rof which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a razor blade honing handle, the same being designed to hold any type of safety razor blade, and it aims to construct a holder having separable blade gripping or clamping parts formed with` means to protect one edge of a double-edged blade while .the other edge is being honed or stropped, and also improved means for clamping the parts against the blades.
Further, the invention resides in an ini proved honing handle for safety razor blades in which the blade is introduced and .removed by relative endwise'movement, and
it consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described .in detail, succinctly set forth in the claims and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing Figure l is a side elevation of the iniproved stropping handle for safety razor blades;
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof; and
Figs. 3, 4C and 5 areldetailed sectional views taken respectively on lines 3 3, Lini and 5--5 of F ig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the honing handle, in its construction, consists of three pieces or members, namely, a pair of blade gripping parts l and 2, which are extended at one end and riveted together to form a hand grip 3, and a clamping member 4 for bringing the parts l and 2 together against an interposed blade.
As'depicted in Fig. 3,' each blade gripping part or member is formed with a central longitudinal cavity or recess 5 of concave section and facing inwardly toward the recess of the companion part to form therewith a longitudinal chamber for re; ceiving the reinforced barking 6 of the oneedge type of blade, such as 'i'. The longitudinal edges 8 extend in a common plane from the central recess 5, the same being flat and designed to engage the side face .of the blade. One longitudinal edge of part 2 is provided with a guard lip 9 adapted the edges 8.
to overlie the corresponding edge of the companion gripping part so as to protect thatedge of a double edge blade which is not being sharpened. rlhis overhanging lip 9 is preferably formed by bending over the longitudinal edge and Aserves as a surface on which the honing handle may be rolled or turned in the well known stropping operation to alternately present the opposite sides of an edge to the strop.,
Adjacent their inner ends the gripping partsare formed with opposing, outwardly bulging cam portions l0 that are provided with registering longitudinal slots 1l in which operates the clamping pin 4. This pin is equipped at each end witha head 12 designed to slide up and down the cam l0 to tighten and release the grip of the parts on the'blade. A
ln actual use, the gripping parts are normally sprung apart when the clamping pin 4C is at'the lower or inner ends of the slots 11. The blade is then inserted lengthwise into the open ended chamber 5 with one edge projecting the desired distance from The clamping pin is then moved toward the opposite ends of the slot which action iirmly Ibinds the gripping parts onto the blade.
By inserting the blade between the spaced ends of the gripping parts the. edges of the blades are unlikely to become injured, and
also the insertion is facilitated by reason of the fact that at their outer ends the gripping parts are spaced their greatest distance.
What is claimed isz- 1. A honing handle for'ra-zor blades, comprising a pair of blade gripping parts connected at one end to form a handle and normally sprung apart at the opposite end and adapted to be pressed together to clamp a blade, the sprung end of each part formed with a lengthwise recess bordered by oppositely extending, uninterrupted flat side edge portions, a guard lip turned upwardly at right angles from one side edge portion to overlie and guide the opposing edge portion of the companion part when moved to and from clamping position, said guard lip permitting free movement of its guided edge in a plane perpendicular to its supporting edge and means for urging the side edge portions into clamping relation with an interposed blade.
2. A honing handle comprising a pair of tions of a double-edged blade therebetween, blade gripping parts connected at one end the opposing channels adapted to receive to form a handle, the opposite end portion and clamp against the back of an armored 10 of said parts 'having opposing longitudinal or one-edged blade, and means for urging 5 channels, bordered on opposite `sides by Hat, the gripping parts together.
