To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN P. RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented an 1111- provement in Methods of Making Forms and Containers from Fibrous Substances; and Ldo-hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a method of making forms and containers from fibrous substances, such as wood or paper pulp and the like; and it has for its object themanufacture of such articles with rapidity, ease,
and accuracy at low cost.
My method consists of graduated steps which upon completion result in the production of articles of this description.
In order that my invention and method may be clearly understood and readily practised the same is described with r ference to the accompanying drawings, in which similar numerals indicate like parts.
The figure, which is a side elevation, illustrates one means practical for use in giving efi'ect to my hereinafter described method. It also shows the mold, wherein the forms and containers are shaped, in open position in dotted lines.
From a suitable storage-tank, 2, a sufficient quantity of shredded pulp iswithdrawn and deposited in the air-pipe line, 3, which connects at one end with a suitably supplied compressed air tank, at. The other end of the air pipe line, 3, is provided with a nozzle, 5, which opens into a separable porous mold, 6. When the valve, 7, in the air-pipe line, 3, is opened the shredded pulp previously deposited therein is blown by the action of the compressed air into the separable mold. The compressed air in escaping through the pores of the mold drives before it the particles of shredded pulp but inasmuch as the pores in the mold are too small to admit the passage therethrough of the pulp particles the action of the compressed air gradually plugs one after another thepores of the mold until the shredded pulp forms a layer of uniform thickness within and conformingto the shape of the mold; andat the same time the force of the compressed air holds the layer firmly against the mold. The shreddedpulp layer is then sprayed with a suitable binding solution contained in a pneumatic tank, 8.
The space'in the tank above the level of the solution is filled'with compressed air, connecting with a conveniently located air compressor (not shown in the drawings), which constantly exerts a pressure downward on the solution. nected with the said mold by a pipe-line, 9, which is provided with a nozzle, 10, at its point of entrance into the mold. Therefore, when the valves, 11, in the pipe-line, 9, are opened the action of the compressed air in the pneumatic tank forces the solution out of the tank through the pipe-line, 9. As the binding solution enters the mold it is converted into a spray through the action of the compressed air from the compressed air tank, 4, which meets and atomizes the solution as the latter enters the mold. The shredded pulp layer is treated with the binding solution, in the manner just described, until it is thoroughly moistened, whereupon the solution is hut oil by closing the valves, 11. The pulp layer is then dried by expelling the moisture therein through the pores of the mold by the continued action of the compressed air from the compressed air tank, 4:. When this has been aocom plished the compressed air tank is shut cit and the finished container may then be removed from the mold.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letter Patent, is:
1. The method of making. forms and containers consisting of conducting shredded fibrous pulp under air pressure into a per forat-ed mold, then admitting to said mold a suitable binding solution in a vaporized state and also under air pressure, for the purpose of binding the pulp particles together', and then expelling the moisture from .said pulp by the action of air under pressure.
2. The method of making fibrous forms and containers consisting of conducting by air pressure shredded fibrous pulp into a porous mold, then spraying the said pulp as the same is held within the mold with an atomized solution for the purpose of binding the pulp particles together in a continuous layer conforming to the form of the mold, and then expelling the moisture from said pulp by the action of compressed-air.

The method of making fibrous forms and containers consisting of distributing by compressed air shredded fibrous pulp in an 7 even layer Within a porous mold, and simultaneously binding the pulp particles together by an atomized solution sprayed against said ulp layer, and then drying said ulpby the action of compressed air.
