Description

D. F. MERRIMAN.. YCLINKER REMOVING DEVICE.
APPLICATION HLED FEB-17,1919.
Patented Dec. 30,1919.
Inventor; DFJWer/"z'man, 6y
mete srnrns PATENT ormon DAVID E. MERRIMAN, or WATERLOO, IOWA.
CLINKER-REMOVIN'G DEVICE.
Application filed February 17, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID F. MERRIMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clinker-Removing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention'relates to improvements in clinker-removing devices, and the object of my improvement is to provide a tool for that purpose having opposable grasping members, of which one member is mounted on the other for relative rocking and sliding movements, whereby a clinker or other body or article may be seized and firmly held in any part.
This object is accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, and Fig. 2 a top plan of the same, Figs. 3 and 4 are detail perspective views of the grasping parts of the device, taken on an enlarged scale, and as viewed from difl'erent directions.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The numeral 1 denotes an elongated tubular sleeve-member within which is seated for both rocking and longitudinal sliding movements a solid rod 10 whose opposite end parts project therefrom at both ends. One end of said rod is bent reversely into a transverse handle 12. The other or forward extremity of the rod is curved downwardly in hook form to serve as a grasping member 11. The forward end part 2 of the sleeve 1 is curved downwardly, and a longitudinal slot 13 is milled out or otherwise made in the sleeve in the upper face of its curve of bending, the rod 10 being passed through the slot.
In the hollow 14 of the curved extremity 2 is fitted the short solid shank 8 of a forked grasping member 3. The shank is indented or notched at 7, so that by means of a suitable tool the sleeve may be indented to fit said shank indentation, which effectually locks the shank in the sleeve part 2 against relative movements or withdrawal, and

spread out somewhat, the shank being formed to fit the hollow thereof, which thus insures a thicker and stronger neck to the shank where the maximum strain of use is manifested.
The transverse member 3 has forwardly directed prongs 6 at its ends, opposable to the grasping hook 11, when the latter has been rocked toward either. The member 11 may be varied in its distance from the member 3, by sliding the rod 10 longitudinally in the sleeve 1 by means of the handle part 12, and when an object has been grasped between said grasping members, the latter being downwardly, the device and its load may be carried by means of the handle 12 alone, while retaining the object securely, by reason of the gravity of the sleeve and the member 3 keeping the parts in engagement with the held object.
The grasping members are small and easily intruded into a mass of ashes and clinkers to be used in removing the clinkers, of which any part may be grasped as convenient, because of the variable clutch arrangement permitted by the rocking and slidable hook 11 against any part of the member 3.
In withdrawing a clinker from a fire-pot, after seizure, it is only necessary to pull on the handle 12, as the drag of the sleeve 1 will sufiiciently clamp the clinker between the grasping parts.
The slotting of the sleeve 1 at its angle of curvature causes more secure seating and its curve, a pronged integral grasping memher having an indented shank fitted in the curved end of said element, the Wall of the said element being compressed lockingly into the indentation of said shank to prevent relativ movements thereof, and a rod slidingly and rockingly mounted in said tubular element to project through said slot and formed with a grasping member opposable to said first-mentioned grasping member. 10 Signed at Waterloo, Iowa, this 30th day of January, 1919.
