ERNST H. BARBER, 0F WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
' BATHERS APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec 23, 1919,
Application filed March 30, 1918. semi No. 225,680.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST H. BARBER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at lVorcester, in the county of'Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts; have invented a new-and useful Improvement in Bathers Appliances, of which the following,
taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The present invention relates to a new article of manufacture for the convenience anduse of bathers. The invention resides in the provision of a device which enables .persons who have on bathing suits, and are without pockets or the like for the carrying of money, to carry money on their person in a safe, convenient and ready manner, and in such a way that it will not interfere .with their activity in the water. 5
The invention is described hereinafter in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents the appliance in position on the wrist of a wearer.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the appliance.
Fig. 3 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line H, Fi 2.
ike reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures.
Theflappliancetakes the forniof a band of water proof material, adapted to encircle the wrist of the bather, in a manner similar to the'strap of a wrist watch. As specifically illustrated herein,'the device is shown as a continuous band 1, but it is obvious that the same ma if desired, be divided, and the two meeting ends thereof joined by a buckle or clasp of ordinary construction, not shown.
As a material for the manufacture of this band, I prefer to use rubber, or some other elastic and water-proof material. However,
my invention is not limited to the use of such material, since it is obvious that any flexible fabric, leather, or the like, may be em loyed for the purpose.
t one portion thereof the band 1 has a preferably integral enlargement 2, here shown of circular form. This enlargement 2 is constructed with s aced top and bottom walls 3 and 4, which mclose a fiat circular space 5. This space 5 is suitable for the reception of coins or any other small articles that the wearer may wish to carry with him while attired in his bathing suit, and which articles he would otherwise be unable to carry because of an absence of pockets said suit. Access to the space 5 is through a slit 6 of suitable length in either the, top wall 3 or the bottom wall 4, and preferably the material at the edges of this slit is slightly thicker to increase its firmness and prevent the accidental loss of coins therethrough. I
If the appliance be made of rubber, or other elastic fabric, which I now deem pref erable as a material for the manufacture of the same, the band 1 can be made small enough to be put under slight tension 'when in place on the wrist of the wearer, it being understood that the elasticity of the material will allow it to be stretched over the hand of the wearer. When thus under tension, the edges of the slit 6 are drawn tightly together, and may even overlap, and thus securely retain the coins in the space 5. When the wearer desires to obtain a coin, he simply stretches back one edge of the slit 6 and extracts the coin, after which the material springs back intoplace and substantially closes the space 5. For greater safety and protection against the ingress of water to the space 5, the appliance may be reversed on the wrist of the wearer from the position shown in Fig. 1, namely, with the slit 6 facing downward and in contact with the wrist, whereby the continuous unbroken surface of the wall 4 is presented on the outside.
I claim,
As a new article of manufacture, a
bathers appliance consisting of a band of pocket extending lengthwise of said band,
whereby the edges of said slit are drawn together by the tension of said band when in position.
ERNST H. BARBER. Witnesses:
