REVERSE GEAR FOR'STEAM ENGINES.

JOHN E. FRY, OF MOUNT JACKSON, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD '10 ERNEST T.
FRY AND ONE-THIRD TO JACOB M. MOSES, BOTH 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN E. FRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Jackson, in the county of Shenandoah and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reverse-Gears for Steam-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in valve operating devices for locomotives, and the purpose of the invention is to provide means for operating the valves of both cylinders from a single eccentric, fixed to one of the driving axles, and also to provide an arrangement whereby the rocking links through which the valves are actuated may be conveniently located in forward positions near the steam chests.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a locomotive frame having my improvements thereon;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, the valve operating and reversing mechanism being shown in full lines and parts of the locomotive being shown in dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and,
Fig." 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
. Referring to the drawing, A indicates the frame of a locomotive, 1 and 2 the cylinders, 3 and 4 the steam chests, and 5 and 6 the valve rods. Links 7 and 8 connect the rear ends of the valve rods 5 and 6 with blocks 9 and 10, which are slidable on rocking links 11 and 12, respectively. These rocking links 11 and 12 are secured at their centers to rock shafts 13 and 14, which are journaled in bearings 15 and 16 on the forward portion of the frame adjacent the cylinders, and also sleeved one within the other as shown at 17 in Fig. 4. The rock shaft 14 is provided with an arm 18, which is connected by a link 19 to a strap 20 on an eccentric 21, which latter is keyed to one of the driving wheel axles 22. The other rock shaft, 13, is provided with an arm 23 which is connected by a link 24 to an arm 25 on a rock shaft 26, and secured to the latter shaft is an arm 27 which extends over the eccentric 21 and is provided with a longitudinal slot 27 The eccentric strap 20 has an upward projection 28, carrying a Specification of Letters Patent.

pin 29 which extends through the slot 27 and through a bearing block 30, which is adapted to slide within said slot.
The blocks 9 and 10 are adjustableon the rocking links 11 and 12 by means of the reversing lever 31 and intermediate connections comprising a rod 32, which is connected to a lever 33 on a shaft 34, and two levers 35 and 36, secured to the latter shaft and having their opposite ends connected to links 37 and 38, which are connected to the sliding blocks 9 and 10.
In operation, the direction of motion is controlled by adjusting the reverse lever which controls the setting of the sliding blocks on the rocking links in the usual manner, through the connections just de- It will be noted that there is but one eccentric, and that this eccentric is secured to the driving axle. As the locomotive moves, one of the valve rods, in this instance, the valve rod 6 is actuated by the link 19, which is connected directly between the strap on the eccentric and the arm 18 on the shaft 14 which carries the rocking link 12. The rotation of the eccentric also causes an upward and downward movement of the arm 27, and the latter in turn rocks the shaft 26. Through the arm 24, link 25, and arm 23, this rocking motion is transmitted to the shaft 13 which carries the rocking link 11 on which is mounted the sliding block 9. Thus, from the single eccentric on the axle 22, both of the rocking links are actuated and since the blocks on said links are connected to the valve rods, the two valves are operated from the single eccentric.
What I claim is:
1. In a valve gear for locomotives, the combination with a pair of rock shafts having crank arms, links centrally secured to said shafts, blocks slidable on said links and connections from the blocks to the valve stems of the locomotive, of means for rocking said links comprising an eccentric fixed to one of the driving axles, and means for operating both of said rock shafts from said eccentric.
2. In a valve gear for locomotives, the combination with a pair of rock shafts having crank arms, links centrally secured to said shafts, blocks slidable on said links and connections from the blocks to the valve stems of the locomotive, of means for rocking said links comprising an eccentric fixed to one of the driving axles and provided with a strap, a rod directly connecting said strap with one of said crank arms, a countershaft, means for rockingsaid counter-shaft from said eccentric, and a link connection between said counter-shaft and the other of said crankarms.
3. In a valve gear for locomotives, the combination with a pair of rock shafts having crank arms, links centrally secured to said shafts, blocks slidable on said links and connections from the blocks to the valve stems of the locomotive, of means for rocking said links comprising an eccentric fixed to one of the drlving aXles and provided with a strap, a rod directly connecting said strap with one of said crank arms, a countenshaft, an arm secured to said countershaft and having a sliding connection With a part on said strap, and connections between said counter-shaft and the other of said crank arms for rocking the latter.
In testimony whereof I affiX rny signature.
15 JOHN X E. FRY.
